Go for a rescue dog, you can get great dogs that are already very affectionate and house trained. Puppies are going to almost always bite/chew and take some time to get house trained, especially if you aren't used it. Go to your shelter and tell them exactly what you need and see what they recommend. If you and your dad go and find a few sweet dogs and then bring your mom to see them they may win her over.

Lots of dogs will fit the bill...I have a miniature dachshund that could just melt your heart -he's docile, very well-tempered, and wants nothing more than for you to pay attention to him. The American Kennel Club, as with any other dog-breeder's association, can provide you with information as to the disposition and temperment of any numbers of dog breeds. Bear in mind, I have also had many 'mutts' that were just as lovable and sweet-tempered, so don't think you have to pay the big bucks for a dog with breeding papers. Go to your local pound and have a look, I've gotten some of my best dogs from there. Take your parents, pound puppies have a way of wagging their way into the hardest hearts.

One cool medium/small sized dog...they're so awesome! But link below is great in finding the specific type of dog you want. All dogs are cool, my favorite dogs ever have always been muts. :)
But the schipperke is so totally cute, loyal, protective and just cool. Read up, but they are serious guard dogs! heh. I doubt you'll want to keep this li'l fella in the laundry.

You could try a terrier. A short haired one probably wont shed too much. ^-^
