My understanding is that the tree of life represented eternal life which was God's original plan for mankind. However after eating from the forbidden tree the two in the garden were no longer allowed to eat from the tree of life. This would have created a dilemma. Fro to eat from the tree of life after the fall would have immortalized sin. sin will be eradicated at the 2ND lake of fire spoken of in Revelation chapter 20. From Genesis to Revelation is the story of how God will restore Eden.

Actually one tree is called the 'tree of the knowledge of good and evil'. The 'tree of life' is what God provided for them to experience life to the fullest. The only time they wanted to eat of the other tree was based on the deception that they could be like God.

One tree contrasts the other.

Basically speaking, those who are partakers of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil represents those who are fundamental in their belief systems. Legalists who think we should conform to a list of rules and regulations.

Those who partake of the tree of life understand God's free gift of grace to them and are able to extend that grace to other people.

The Early Christian Fathers and biblical exegeses always understood the Tree of Life to be the Cross. Gen. is very typological / allegorical in nature and should be read as such. A Christian should always read the OT through the light of the gospels.

The tree of Knowledge gave the eater the knowledge of good and evil. however this made you mortal because you couldn't have immortal humans running around that knew how to be bad.

The tree of Life made you immortal again. but didnt reverse the aquisition of the knowledge.

the fruit of the tree of life gave immortality. Adam and Eve with a knowledge of good and evil and immortality would be gods themselves. God banished them before they could eat a second time.
