Of course, it is the teachers JOB to react to a statement like that. If you are the teacher in question, and you do not feel well equipped to answer such a question, refer the student to your school's social worker where the problem can be dealt with appropriately.

The false bravado of the student might be hiding the fact that he can't read or something basic like that. People get embarrassed and feel "dumb" and lash out, but they aren't dumb, they probably just have a different learning style.

What we have here is a failure to communicate. Some people you just can't reach. Which is the way he wants it, so he get's it.
