Sorry to hear about everything that is going on. Kids understand more than we give them credit for. Being diplaced in another state for the time length that they did could indeed have an impact on him. When kids are in a familiar area they are comfortable and are willing to do more things cause they feel safe. Taking a child out of his known surroundings and at an age where a child is at his learning point can really scare him. I'm sure you noticed when your home with your own child, they talk and play and so on. As soon as they get some where that they don't know, they are quiet and to themselves. You did mention that he is not really home yet. Possibly all this is still alittle scary but in time I'm sure that all will be well. His silence might be his own safety neat for him. When he is ready, he will talk again. Then he may talk alot after that. Good luck and I hope everything goes well.

hi. i am from paulina 40 miles west of new orleans, it may just be normal for him but knowing somewhat of everything ya'll have been through having had some of the same i would maybe talk to a professional because it is possible the whole experience with Katrina and losing a lot maybe the problem. at that age they understand more than what we think they do. hope we have a safe season this year good luck and god bless.

Kids can get stressed out too! According to a speech pathologist friend of mine, 2 year olds should be saying 2-3 word sentences. He may need time to readjust after the trauma.

I would have him professionally evaluated. Is he making any noise at all, or did he just stop? I would definitely see a mental health professional if he stopped entirely. He may have post traumatic stress disorder or selective mutism or some other disorder, especially since he WAS starting to talk. Make sure the professional knows he did start to say some of those words.

Kids developed differently. My son started to talk at the age of 3. Also when kids are taken from their enviroment and have to go thru a traumatic experience they might feel scared or out of place just like we do. So give him time and make him feel safe and he will be okay.

don't worry about it. The stress of the storm probably got to him. When I was 18 months and my sister was born I didn't talk for a whole year. Just keep talking to him like veverythings normal and he'll eventually talk back.

My nephew did the same thing he didn't go through a hurricane but he did go through his parents getting a divorce. My sister put him into speech classes and counseling and he is talking up a storm now.

it sounds like the child might have posttraumatic stress disorder. they should take him to a child psychologist. he will probably start talking again when his life settles down, but it would be a good idea to get him psychological help. autism will cause children to regress, that is stop using words they have already learned, but if this problem started when the storm hit, it sounds like that is the problem.

Try pictures.
Have him draw. and point " is this ----------?"
if no answer keeping talking like he would.

you could try putting him with other kids his age, some peer social time.

when my son was quiet, we gave him a therapist to come onced a week and here all he wanted was to see one safe and stable thing in his life he could count on, on that day, each time.

i wish i could offer more advice, but that is all i can think of for now. i wish you luck.
