You cannot get to the center of a tootsie pop by licking alone. I say this because the center is composed of a paper stick, not the chewy tootsie roll middle. You have to chew through the tootsie roll in order to meet the actual center of the infamous lollipop.

Actually, both the lab mice and the kids cited above must have quick, muscle-bound tongues then. :)

On a local radio show about a year and a half ago, a guest had actually spent 3 DAYS up with a Tootsie Roll Pop in one hand and a mechanical counter in the other. Nobody said whether his efforts were continuous or not, but the final counted number was slightly over 587,000 licks.

The poor fellow's tongue was so thoroughly abused by the experience by the time he got to the roll, he could barely speak coherently. And apparently all the tongue action--no biting, the guy left his teeth *out* of his mouth!--drove his wife nuts because shortly after the stunt the guy was divorced.

Some things....the world just wasn't meant to know. o_O

Actually, recent research performed at Cornell University shows it takes an average of 189.3 licks to get to the center of a tootsie pop. Of course, the study subjects were lab mice. More grant money is needed to fully answer this question.
