I potty trained two year olds at my preschool. You have to see the signs that the child is ready, if not, it will be an uphill battle that you will NOT win. If your child is starting to stay dry for long periods of time (over 6 hours) and using the toilet, or interested in the toilet, I say try! With my daughter, I noticed she was becoming ready, so I took her to the store and showed her all the cute underwear. I told her if she stayed dry in her pull-up all weekend, we would buy her some cute underwear. It worked that weekend!

I have 4 girls and they were very hard to potty train. I tried everything and I'm still trying on my 2 youngest. But what seemed to help my other 2 the best was praise after they went on the toilet. And making them clean up their own potty mess, take clothes to the laundry room, and wiping up the evidence. They seem to get sick of cleaning that they go in the bathroom. And I remind them every hour, I say "where to we go potty at" They say "In the toilet" and then I congratulate them on knowing the answer and give them a high five. Its working slowly for me. I wish you luck, its pretty hard. :-)

Assuming you are training a child, there isn't a one-line (or even one-page ) answer to that.
Get a good book - 'what to expect the toddler years' is a good one - costs around $10 in wal-mart. do _not_ believe any person / book who claims you can potty train in a day. it requires lots of time and patience.

Is the child a boy or a girl? Boys are best trained going to the bathroom with an older sibling or their fathers...a man thing...they are visual learners by nature...Girls tend to learn through repetition...when a girl gets up in the morning before anything else sit her on the pot until she goes...the same with after naps and after meals...girls are generally more hands on or in this case bottom on learners...
