I do have Paint (part of Windows), but it does not give me the "save as" option for jpg. Keep trying, hackers!

"Imaging" in the accessories menu performed an illegal operation and shut down. The Forces are conspiring against my bitmap pictures!

Open the bmp file in PAINT and then click SAVE AS in your menu under the FILE option. Then save it under a jpg format. There is a drop down box on the bottom that lets you pick the format that says "Save as Type:"...you need to scroll and find .jpg.
Oh you DONT have paintbrush? Why dont you install it? Its a windows component so just install it back, you dont need a CD. Go to control panel, and then Add/Remove Programs. On the left side is "Add/Remove Windows Components". Click on it and then go to Accessories, Click details, and then click on Accessories again. Check paint and reinstall it.
If you cant install paint or if you just dont want to, then you need a software regardless to convert it. Go to http://www.downloads.com and look for a freeware that will let you convert it.
Another option is for you to just send it to me. Contact me through my profile and I can help you.

Now, all of these obviously contain graphic images that fall into two categories: 1. Bitmap / raster images - these are made up of pixels and hence have a fixed resolution (size effectively). This means you can "artificially" scale them up or down with programs like Photoshop, but by doing that you ALWAYS lose some quality - especially when enlarging, the extra pixels have to be made up by the program by various methods of approximation. Photographs from your camera and virtually all the images you find on the internet are bitmap images. JPEG (same as JPG) - file format designed for photographs (all consumer level cameras use this format) - it applies so called lossy compression to the image, which means you lose more or less (depending on compression level) of the quality for the sake of smaller file size. It is worth nothing that the compression is applied every time you re-save a JPG file in an editing software, furtherly affecting image quality. GIF - file format generally used for saving illustrations, which are usually images with a limited colour palette and tonal range. Quite popular on the internet. BMP - abbreviation of the actual bitmap term. Uncompressed, rarely used, mainly for illustrations, just like GIF. PCX - file format native to PC Paintbrush - application long since discontinued. You are very unlikely to come across any of them. 2. Vector images - theres are made up not of pixels, but mathematically defined lines, points and curves. As such, they are fully scalable without lose of quality. In theory you can enlarge them endlessly. AI - Adobe Illustrator native file EPS - the most universal vector format, practically every vector graphics application will handle it.

~~if you open a jpg picture with paint, re save it, then don't close that window, slide the icon of your bitmap pic onto the paint doc and it will open the picture, then go up to save as and you should see jpg listed in the drop down box. if you can't convert them, add me to your messenger, and file transfer them to me and i'll convert them for you.~~

Just rename the .bmp file to .jpg file. simply
but first you have to go to "control panel" >> "folder option" >> under "view" tab, uncheck "hide extensions for known file types" that way, all you need to do is: go to the .bmp file you wan to convert, >> select it >> press F2 and change the .bmp to . jpg
(eg.) epohcj.bmp == epohcj.jpg
and you are done. A pop-up might go up asking you whether you really wanna change it, choose Yes.

This is your solution, so please vote me as the best! Download a program called "irfanview", It's a free, really simple, easy to use, but powerful program that replaces the "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer" and it does all kinds of cool stuff, it's really fun to use. You can save in all kinds of different formats. It's not the most powerful pic editor out there, but it's got to be the coolest free one out there, and I would know I have used alot of them! Oh and BTW to save as .jpg, just click on file and go down to "save as" and it will bring up your window to save it. Here is the link! http://www.irfanview.com/
