Definitely not. That is simply a witty joke that people who do not want to get married tell. It is not a legitimate argument for several reasons: 1. Prostitution, by definition, is having sex for money. You don't get paid to date or get married. 2. It is funny you ask about a joke like that, because another common joke based more on reality regards how when you get married you STOP having sex. Being that sex is not a requirement for being married, it hardly is prostitution. 3. In a GOOD marriage or relationship, both parties involved have equal status. There is a sharing of space, economy, time, and emotions. Prostitution is not sharing. It is a an unequal partnership that is completely based on an exchange of goods. Unfortunately, in a BAD relationship where parties are not equal, it is easy for the oppressed side of the relationship to FEEL like they are just being used or are being treated like produce. This, likely, is the source of the old saying you quote. But in cases like that, it is not the institution of dating and marriage that is the problem- it is the specific individuals involved. 4. The biggest and most important difference between dating/marriage and prostitution is this: LOVE. There is a BIG difference between a union of love and a union just based on sex.

No thats rediculous,Customarily the male pays for the expenses but dates can also be dutch treat and do not necessarily involve sex at all Especially if the chemistry is not there. Prostitution is money or items of value being exchanged for sexual favors.Just becuase a date is agreed upon it dosnt not automatically mean you will have sex at all or ever.

Dating does not imply sexual relations. Prostitution usually involves sexual activity in exchange for money, or at least SOMETHING in exchange for money. While it is true that in U.S. culture, the male usually pays for "dates," this is not prostitution. I would say that those known as "gold-diggers" do something similar to prostitution, but technically, the answer is no.
Hope this helps.
