We have an ace in the hole called nuclear submarines. If on the unlikely occurrence that the US is wiped out in a nuclear strike, these guys will roam around until they get close to the offending countries then launch and obliterate them. This is called (and I kid you not) the MAD policy for Mutual Assured Destruction. Russia has these subs too, I am not sure if China has them. Russia also has a system that if we were to obliterate them that will start a countdown then launch everything they have at once.
These are the cold war fail safes to make sure we did not attack each other since an attack on one would be suicide to the other. So since the consequences for a first strike are so dire, we really don't have to worry about a nuclear attack from those countries.
But if it were to happen, just go to some of the cold war shelters and cross your fingers and pray. There are plenty of fall out shelters around and certain civic buildings are required to be fall out safe. No doubt about it, if the bombs start flying there will be one great fireworks show from space.

The strategic nukes will takeout whole cities and cause widespread contamination, in the 100-500 kiloton range. One or two strategic nuclear detonations, or even 50 would not cause world-wide contamination, its when you get into a full nuclear exchange, between the US and Russia with 1,000s of nukes going off, is when life would be 'unlivable.'
To think that a premptive strike on our part would knock out their missiles is ludicrous, in view of the hair triggers, mobile launch platforms (subs & land based) and launch on warning systems both sides have in place.
The W.H.O. predicted in 1982 that "1.1 billion people would be killed outright in such a nuclear war, mainly in the US, Russia, Europe, China and Japan. An additional 1.1 billion people would suffer serious injures and radiation sickness, for which medical help would be unavailable. It thus seems possible that more than 2 billion people-almost half of all the humans on Earth-would be destroyed in the immediate aftermath of a global thermonuclear war. ... would probably be enough to reduce at least the Northern Hemisphere to a state of prolonged agony and barbarism."
Carl Sagan made a case that "a war in which a mere 100 megatons were exploded, less than one percent of the world arsenals, and only in low-yield airbursts over cities. ....would ignite thousands of fires, and the smoke from these fires alone would be enough to generate an epoch of cold and dark almost as severe as in the 5000 megaton case. The threshold for ...The Nuclear Winter is very low."

crad the only nuclear threat there is right now is an over proliferation
of nuclear weapons, it is estimated that 27.000 nuclear head exists this include 12 000 US nuclear heads..
The main nuclear problem existing is that the US won't sign disarmement or allow inspection of its weaponry. The US also anounced that it wnats to replace its nuclear arsenal and that it had engaged its budjet into star wars What does it show to the world, it shows that the US has become the GLOBAL threat to peace..
See the United Nation sponsored BLIX report on WMD world wide and look at the recommendations, you can download the full 231 pages report here, if you are a lazy reader; read at least the recommendations on disarmement:

To quote Albert Einstein: "I don't know how World War 3 will be fought, but I do know that World War 4 will be fought with sticks and stones." There will never be a war fought with nuclear weapons. The militaries of all of the nuclear powers have a policy called "Assured Mutual Destruction." Which is what would happen if a nuclear war ever did occur.

If we fired all our missiles and Russia and or China fire theirs I can assure you that there will be no winners. Conditions around the world will become very harsh, though survivable depending on how far from a blast you were and if you had made adequate preparations for food and water for a long time.
And, as we know, history repeats itself, England and Germany would do what they could but the rest of Europe would tuck their tails and bury their heads like the cowards they are.

What can we do if a nuclear warfare begins between the U. S. and Russia? Take an excellent stance, legs about shoulder huge aside, and then bend on the waist attaining yours palms out in the front of you till your hands are on the floor. At this aspect grab your ankles consisting of your palms and slowly pull your head into your butt. all people who thinks a 'constrained nuclear warfare' with Russia is available is thoroughly insane or only lacking straightforward experience. one of those conflict would with out delay amplify right into a international nuclear conflict which may in essense end the present status of all international locations in the international.

There's no way that would happen, as both China and Russia would be in ruins. It's suicide. The U.S. has quite a few missiles and most of ours will hit their targets.
Even taking into account the unreliability of the Russ/China missiles, we would be in ruins, too.
