my puppy's breath smells like rotten fish. She eats well, dry food with a small treat of table scraps. She weighs 5 pounds.

The best way to prevent bad breath in dogs is to make sure their teeth are in good health by brushing them regularly. SHouldn't be a problem in a puppy that young though. Feed them veggies like baby carrots and stuff should help.

Generally four reasons for rotten breath:

1- Rotten teeth. Get her teeth checked.

2- Unclean teeth. Make sure she has raw bones regularly to keep her teeth clean. A dog which eats raw bones regularly should have white teeth without yellow buildup.

3- Poor diet. You can check the table scraps you're giving her. You can make her a mash with hot water, biscuits, vegemite, and raw garlic which may help.

4- Digestive problems. Unlikely. Teeth is the most common cause.

I wouldn't use those Greenies things. I know that dogs have swallowed large lumps of them and died from blocked intestines. They're a moneymaking idea, a scam where a company creates an expensive artificial substitute for a cheap natural product which doesn't work as well as the natural thing (raw bones).

Definitely check the anal gland thing too. Almost no-one knows about that and they should. It can make a dog's life very uncomfortable.

Believe it or not, it's her anal glands that is causing the bad smell.
Anal glands are small sacks in the tissues around dog's butt hole (gross, sorry) the sacks fill with a nasty gooey fluid that smells so bad!! As the sacks fill, they start to annoy the dog, who then licks the area, a small amount of the fluid is expressed into the mouth and it seems like the breath is bad.
A veterinarian can show you how to express the fluid before the sacks become infected, if you want to do it yourself. In my opinion it's worth a few dollars for someone else to do that nasty job.
If you are interested, small dogs are particularly prone to anal gland problems. Normally this fluid would empty when the dog poops, it is an extra added smell for other animal to enjoy.

I knew about the anal glands problem, but not that it caused bad breath by licking! Wow!
I do not even have a small dog, but I have always known that their breath stank, esp. that of Chihuahuas. Do you not feel weird that you don't know how to spell Chihuahua? They really did originate in Mexico, and if you look on a map you can spell Chihuahua. Or just remember that it's "chee huah huah" and spell it like it sounds. You could even write it 25 times for practice.
