I just read the question about the Pilot boat. What I'd like to know is what is the purpose of 2 little US Coast Guard boats and a Pilot boat guiding our Norwegian Spirit into Port Canaveral from NYC.
We had a Pilot along with 2 US Coast Guard boats(small 1's )

The Coast Guard routinely patrols US ports for security. A US Coast Guard patrol escorts cruise ships into port as a "part of routine security operations".

The pilot boat is an accompaniment because they need to retrieve the pilot from the ship once they (the pilot) are no longer required. That is the ship is docked or is far enough outside of the port to be out of all local navigational dangers.

A pilot boat shows up to all cruise ships when they reach a port. The pilot boat has technical information for the ship on navigating through the port on that day, things like other ships coming and going that the captain mat need to be aware of, and any changes in the port since the ship was last there.

Canaveral is the site of the NASA space schuttle facility so the coast guard were probably doing their regular patrols of that area, ... to guard agains terriorists attacks.

if I am not mistaken a pilot boat delivers a person from the port to steer the ship into port. the crew cant know every port in the world so this way is safer.
