Age has never been a determining aspect to me when it comes to respecting people. I've known young and old that were worthy of respect. And I have known young and old that I never felt the need to respect. The same goes with authority figures. Some of them shouldn't be respected. Sometimes it really is your obligation to rebell when things are jacked up. If you don't you are no better than the people who are doing the jacked up things. And aren't worthy of my respect either.
One's age doesn't make them better than you or more worthy of respect. Only their actions, and how they treat people, Parents don't deserve to be respected by their child simply for forcing the child to exist. You will get it if you earn it. Or keep it rather. Most kids start off respecting parents and people of athority. Then they go and prove that they aren't worthy of respect.

are there any smart idiots?
Yes, when I grow up I might understand. Somehow I made it to be 24, was in the military for years, and still am a child. I should go apply for disabiliy

I do think it should be given to everyone, until reason is given not to. And doing something because it makes life easier, just doesn't fit in my nature. Difficulty is not what determines my choics in life.

Well, I'm 67 and retired after 22 years of working for the Gubbernment among other things. I've been all over the world, have 2 advanced degrees and I see things in the light of someone who has lived through a number of historic events.

No, I don't expect someone to respect me, just because I have a more extensive background than they do simply by virtue of the fact that I am many multiples of their age. I do think it's only right, however, for a younger person to respect my knowledge, age and maturity if for no reason that I know a whole lot more than they do.

You are right, however... respect is given because the person giving it feels this is the only 'right' thing to do. Unfortunately, many young people think they can demand respect when they are unwilling to give it to others or, when they just don't deserve it for whatever reason.

You will learn, as you get older, that you MUST respect a person's position, even if you don't respect the person... to do otherwise will make it very hard to get or keep a job and can bring all sorts of unpleasant things down on your head..

I do very much agree with you...that parents often think that they dont have to respect children. and that is wrong. Children learn how to treat others by how you treat them.
I hate to sound cliche', but you are the better person when you show respect to all people. Be aware of the example you are setting for your children. If in the end, the individual doesnt deserve respect, that isnt someone you or your children should be spending time with.

Generally a person who is older than you has more experience than you. This doesn't mean that they have your best interests at heart though unfortunately. The people that you know who love you and only want good things for you should be truly respected. As for authority figures.....respecting them can help you. You may not agree with them or like them as a person or anything like that but they could possibly make your life miserable, so fake it if you have to and then vent later. I know that this is kissing up, but while blowing up at them makes you feel better it usually just makes things worse.

even if they are not worthy of respect, still you should show your respect for them,no matter if you really think so.
first ,people of authority can help you or ruin you in some specilal situations.and a friend is always better than an enemy.
and if you want to make friends with older ones ,your respect for them is indispensable,i think that's because adult are in greater needs of respect or they may get enraged or upset.so forget what you are really thinking, act like a mature guy
second,i think politeness ,allowance is quite important element in ones' character,so you can take every chance to practise your tolerance

If for no other reason than respect for experience, but only if the "older person" in question shows knowlege and respects you as an intelligent human being as well.

children should be taught to show respect to everyone until they learn that the person does not deserve respect. and children don't know who deserves respect, so should show respect for everyone.

I don't think there's anything anybody can say that will change your thinking about this. Maybe one day when you grow up you'll understand what respect is all about.
