The US Roman Catholic bishops at Los Angeles Meeting Ok a new translation for Mass
1 example of change (of many)--The act of Penitence in which parishioners now confess aloud "through my own fault, through my own grievous fault"

It seems they feel the word sin is too harsh a word . And would like some changes in future. And that now times would mean updating some old believes. The vote on changes for future was 175 in favor to 29 in opposed.

When did sin become a bad word? All comments welcomed

The new translation is just moving the English closer to the original Latin.

Current version: "I have sinned through my own fault."

New version: "I have sinned greatly ... through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault."

The word "sin" is not being removed.

With love in Christ.

It seems the new Pope really wants to go the easy way. When I heard that they discontinued "Confession" why was that? That seemed to work well, now it's all up to the people to do for themselves without personal contact with the Church leaders which kept the people focused and accountable. Now there is no longer that support from the Church, so people are falling away. I see it all around me, really faithful Church goers are now not going at all.
Note: Did you know that a newsreporter overheard the Pope say upon His election to the Pope position "God why have you forsaken me, I didn't want this position". He should have told the other Church leaders of his standing on the election and that he wanted to NOT be voted into the office. And to have the Pope cry to God that He let him down? Not good, no not good at all!

The new words are making people more responsible for their own personal sin, by saying my Own fault, my own grievous fault. This is alot better than the current translation. It's holding people more responsible for sin! The new translatoins are great because they are faithful to the original latin of the roman missal.

We dont think that the children of God could be sinners. We are not born as a sinner. We are born pure. This was stressed by Swami Vivekananda in the USA around the year 1893 and I am very sure it should have influenced the community greatly. The effects of which could be seen in the news paper reports giving during the time of his speeches. Swami Vivekananda was never against any religion. But he was for the harmony of religions.

"Thru my fault,etc...." is not new....we said that in the 50s-60s-70s during mass while we lightly struck our hearts-breastbone with our fists and with our heads lowered! It was in latin at first and then they changed it to english. These words can be a GENUINE act of humility, remorse and contrition if one is in the right space-heart, but so many can't find that space yet. If these words are just "PRACTICED ROBOTICALLY" and are not the real thing, it is usually repugnant to others to do it or say it, esp if one is not in a place of surrendering to the creator, or to authorities who misuse power. The ego that still wants to be the enjoyer and controller has a hard time admitting fault. When a person has a deep personal relationship with God and they are saying that Penitence Prayer TO GOD, not just because it was something they memorized and were forced to do-say, then it has GREAT meaning and healing-forgiving power with or without a priest who is said to be a representative of Christ.

Also, it was-is the NEGATIVE CONDEMNING TONALITY (fire and brimstone, shameless holier than thou) and NEGATIVE emotional "intensity" that many-some Catholics-Christians used (especially during the 50s and 60s) utilizing phrases like "YOU SINNERS" or some other TOXIC blaming-guilt-shame phrase using the word SIN that was the problem. It is NOT the simple word "SIN" in and of itself. Other religions, east and west, christian and non-christian, can use the word SIN and not HEAP mountains of TOXIC blame-guilt-shame on a person. That often makes a person feel that they must go AWAY from God, since they must be so dispicable and unworthy of mercy-help. A religion that helps draw people CLOSER to God, that helps people WANT to KNOW, LOVE, SERVE God more and INTIMATELY, areligion that exists within a loving-serving community, that helps bring a person closer to humility and acknowledgement of our fallen ways is helping us people take responsibility for our sins, guilt and shame.

When an unskilled "religious" person, especially a zealot, does not know how to really help a person really look within, they are not compassionate, caring or kind, and they make others feel evil and bad and unforgivable. These are SOME of the reasons so many moved away from Catholicism.

But the love and light of the lord can shine in people of all faiths. There are GLOWING Catholics, Protestants, Jews, Moslems, Hindus, etc who love their Creator and try their best to obey His laws.

There comes a time when a spiritual asperant can look at his-her faults-sins-shortcomings and begin to ask for mercy and help Home, regardless of whether it is Catholic or not.

BTW, the LA TImes had an article last month that said that it was a mortal sin to kneel in mass anymore. It was some parish in Huntington Beach I think, a St Mary's? Lots of people are really upset by that. They kneel to show Him respect and to be humble, they say. If kneeling in mass is a mortal sin now, I think the Catholic church is in a lot more trouble than it has been in already! That is ANOTHER sort of misuse of power that the church is using that makes people want to walk away. Lots of Control Freaks and people in positions of authority who are trying to lead their flock when they can't even control themselves sexually, ya know, all the sexual abuse scandals (but sexual abuse happens in all religions by many people who have taken their vows) Blind leading the blind...............This is a very fallen-difficult time we are living in!

<> Mass is just one hour lengthy and once a week. It would not intrude with any pupil's homework. <<"i'm able to't beleive people trust those thoughts, they're like fairy thoughts." and "why problem interpreting for faith? that's a unnecessary class, artwork on some thing else." sometimes my mom acts like she replaced into under no circumstances catholic in her existence... "i'm no longer catholic, how would i understand?">> that is continuously amused me - those non-Catholics who imagine they understand Catholicism more desirable suitable than operating in the route of Catholics themselves! <> in case you do not opt to ask them for a vacation to Mass, see if any of your associates will be prepared to grant you a vacation to/from Mass. if you're presented with a fashion of attending to Mass many times, and reliably - and then turn it down - lacking Mass would characterize sin. If lacking Mass is previous your administration, that isn't any longer sinful - yet make effective you've appeared into and exhausted all opportunities for procuring to Mass.

I think the new wording you mention actually isn't new. It's the way Catholics used to say it -- "mea culpa, mea maxima culpa" is how they said it in Latin.
