Before putting blueberries in a blender for a shake or smoothie, take all the stems off and rinse the berries well in cold water. Berries should be firm and plump and deep bluish purple. If the berries are green, they aren't ripe yet and will likely be bitter. If they are shriveled, they are too old and have lost their texture, juice and taste.

If they are frozen, you don't have to do anything.
If they are fresh, wash them with water first.
You might try using frozen blueberries. It's cheaper, keeps better, and makes the shake icy-cold.
