Born an addict yes you were. You walked though some dark times and you must be afraid. You can not remember who you really are. Go to meeting find people in there who have had the same experience as you. This may sound crazy or not but I found a church non denominational. they had rock music and singing. The first time I went after recovering I cried and my heart opened up. Write down what you feel, and write down what you liked to do when you were young, any hobbies or singing, reading going to different places. Writing helps you bring out the real you and will help you get out some of those strong emotions. remember you our not alone out there. God will help just let go and let him

It's true, we're all born with the tendency to become addicts. Have you looked up anything on the dopamine/serotonin levels in your brain & how they respond to pleasure when you use your drug(s) of choice. It's a fact that our brain responds & when that drug(s) is taken away, our bodies respond negatively. First you need to understand your addiction, you will need treatment (no way around it). Face your disease head on, be ready to want to QUIT or STOP for sure. Of course, attending groups such as AA, NA, GA, and other groups can help you to hear other's stories face to face. You cannot invent a new you, only learn to modify your negative behaviors to turn them into positive ones & recreate a new type of you. Make sure you're ready, look up places that can help you in your area, & groups available in your area. It will take a while, this process can last up to years & you may fail up to 10x before you finally realize this SUX & do recreate a new drug free you. There's no easy answer bud, but I wish you the best of luck & you will get there if you have the WILLPOWER, DESIRE and WANT. You can always look onto AA's website, or NA's website & amazon.com offers good books for reading.

Practice, practice, practice... until the new behavior is yours. You may not be able to change the thoughts, or the feelings- but the behavior is a choice. Choose to behave the way that you know you ought to behave, and just keep conciously doing it until it becomes natural. (takes awhile, but will happen eventually)
There are groups you can go to that can help you. I learned a lot from Recovery, Inc. Check also the self-help section of the bookstore... David Burns comes to mind. But I did my learning in the mid- 80's.
And you may find it helps to connect with a different set of "friends", if the old ones are an influence on your behavior.
Oh, and as for God- "he helps those who help themselves" . It's up to you, now. Best wishes.

move to a new place. I have reinvented myself 9 or 10 times. I usually move to a place in a totally different state with a completely different culture. It is lonely at first, but once you start to work and make friends, you can be anyone you want to be. You can totally mold your personality to be the person you want to be by learning from your mistake from the last place you lived. I have actually been at my current residence for three years. A record.

Contact Alcoholics Anonymous or a similar support group. Or check yourself into a drug rehabilitation center. I'm glad you want to help yourself. May God be with you.
