If Jesus was talking about the future, he would have said the future. He was talking about His death. As He was lifted up, all of mankind was lifted up with Him.
The day of the cross was the end of the world. World in Hebrew is translated as 'age' or 'era'. The old world of law and sin ended and new world of grace and peace began.
This is the gospel, this is the good news !! The end has occured. I wish more Christians would realize this. That there fear and following laws is of no avail. Jesus saved the world. Anything we think we can do to add to or change that is self righteous.
The law was taught so harshly to show people that they could not live up to it no matter how hard they tried.
Spread the good word!!

Yes, in some Bibles, the words of Jesus are in red. Jesus did say these things.
This specific verse is when Jesus was telling people that in the end times, Satan will be cast out of the Earth and Jesus will be lifted up...
He was also referring to when He ascended to Heaven.
He is alive now, and He is drawing everyone (all men) unto Himself.
Pretty cool.

John 12:31, read Acts 26:18; John 12:32, read John 3:14; Rom 5:18; Heb 2:9 ( the death here is the second death ). I hope you get a better understanding from these verses. KJV only.

Yes, Jesus did say this. The prince of this world is the Devil and he will be cast out of this earth. Jesus will draw all men (woman to) unto him. This is a great promise. Remember, Jesus always and forever will keep his promises.
Hope this helps you.
God Bless ~~ Richard

Printing in red is a way of highlighting the words ascribed to Christ, you have to understand that it is a translation and that is where it becomes complicated. John was written about 125ad, that means the community that followed John put their oral tradition in writing. If you were to write about your grandmother, you would pick and choose from family stories, like; Grandma always said... . Now, you can not get her intonation or her humor or be sure what exactly she meant by that saying but she probably said those words, that's what people remember, it caught their imagination for their own reasons.
Now what might Jesus have meant by these words, why did the Johannine community remember them, why do they capture your imagination? You can follow the Catholic academic approach and see what Jerome and other scholars have written in their Commentaries or you can follow the Protestant tradition and ask yourself what it means for you or listen to what it mean to your neighbor.
As for me, I'd say Christ saw his Crucifixion as the salient moment in salvation history.
We will be judged by the criteria of self-sacrificial love. Selfishness or greed will no longer to be considered a justification of moral behavior. (This is a counter to phrases like "In the national interests".) All the world will be attracted to my criteria of love because all people are all looking for a Savior, somebody who will put my interests before their own.
You see, if we get too focused on the words, as they appear in isolation from the translation affects, you end up with insane suggestions like, only men - males - will be drawn to Jesus. So always look for a meaning that is consistent with the larger story. Remember you are a part of the story, your reading of it, contains an invitation to faith. The same as your family history contains an invitation to celebrate your personal history.

According to John, Jesus is referring to his death. By being lifted up on the cross, he will draw people to himself. The prince of this world would be understood to be Satan, and Jesus' death and resurrection are more powerful than Satan. Hope that helps. Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions.

John 12:31-32
33Jesus said, "The voice didn't come for me but for you. At this moment the world is in crisis. Now Satan, the ruler of this world, will be thrown out. And I, as I am lifted up from the earth, will attract everyone to me and gather them around me." He put it this way to show how he was going to be put to death.
