Since he has been on them so long it could actually be worse for him to stop taking them cold turkey.
Whatever his dosage is now, he needs to take that for 1 week. In one week, he needs to lower the dose by 1 pill per day and remain on that dose for 7 days. Then reduce again by 1 pill every 7 days until he is no longer taking any. That way is body gradually gets used to not having the medication and he shouldn't have any withdrawal.
Hopefully after that, he won't want back on it. Also, he should let his Dr. know what is going on, so that the Dr. will not prescribe him anymore either(if that is where he is getting them). After that long he shouldn't still be getting them there.

Good Luck!

Whatever he does he needs to ease off of it slowly. He definitely needs the help of medical professionals because that is a very tough drug to stop.

Get his doctor to refer him to a pain management clinic. They will assess his situation and help him deal with the pain (which may be physical or mental if he is continuing to use).
