If using fresh basil I would say a little less than a fourth of a cup. Assuming you are gently bruising the leaves and not crushing the leaves to the consistency of almost liquid. If using dried basil, then I would use about 2 teaspoons.

There are many different types of basil and the size of the leaves varies a lot.

Also - when you say "crushed" - do you mean dried? If you're substituting dried for fresh basil - be careful. Use half or less of the required amount. Dried basil has a much stronger taste than fresh and can be overwhelming if you add too much.

1Tablespoon fresh herbs = 1 Teaspoon dried.

20 basil leaves = 3 Tbsp
20 basil leaves = 3 tsp = 1 Tbsp dried

When using dried herbs, always rub them together in your hands before adding to food. This releases their natural oils and makes them more flavorful.
