I work in a dental office. Brush in circles for at least three minutes. The correct method is called the Bass Brushing Method, look this up and you will find more detailed information on the proper way to brush.

Actually, you should do it at 45 degree angles (which circles cover). Check out the Colgate or Aqua Fresh websites for How To Brush Your Teeth 101.

Buy a tooth bruth. Buy toothpaste.
Take the cap off the toothpaste.
Put the toothpaste on the toothbrush. I like a little too much.
Leave the cap off the toothpaste just to piss your wife off.
Put the brush in your mouth.
Brush both the fronth and back of your teeth for about 2-1/2 minutes and humm Gilligans Island song to yourself 3 times. The Brady Bunch will work too.
Make sure you spit out the spitall. And then go back and brush your tongue. Brushing your tongue is impotant because your tongue holds the bacteria that causes bad breath. I have a special brush that I use to brush my tongue.
It is called a tongue brush.
It is used for brushing your tongue.
Spit out the spitall from brusing your tongue. You may notice the color of this is a little grosser than from brusing your teeth.
That is because of the bacteria that is located on the back of your tongue in coming out.
Isn't that GROSS! Body juice is so digusing! Good to be rid of that stuff, especially if you are going to kiss you wife.
Or your dog! I love my Dog. Did I tell you her name is Whoppee! She is a Chihuahua. She is so sweet! She loves her belly rubbed and will roll over so I will rub her belly and blow a raspberry on her belly and kiss her.
Hate to do that with bad breath.
OK, now, just wash you mouth out with fresh water that you scoop out with your hand from the sink and you are done!
Oh yes, I forgot.
Please make sure you leave the cap off the toothpaste, and the toilet seat up.
Just to piss your wife up. Except on Easter, Mothers Day and Chistmas.
Unless you are Jewish or Muslum of Course.
Go back and forth.

So we all agree little circles, just don't brush them like your shining your boots as you can wear down the enamel.
One thing you should remember is the bristles are meant to get into the pockets between teeth and gums. so split the brush 50/50 between gums and teeth at 45 degrees

The toothbrush should be at a 45 degree angle towards the gums, so the the bristles can get under your gums and remove plaque. Don't brush hard, it takes very little pressure to remove plaque. I listed a link that has instructions on proper brushing. It is hard to describe without being able to demonstrate.

it sounds dumb but now they're saying circles are bad because in the long run your gums will recede bad. You're supposed to do side to side and then top to bottom but never back up....yeah seemed dumb to me to til I saw the pictures of the old ladies with REALLY nasty teeth. Hope that helps! lol
