I don't know your situation but........It is possible to tell the truth in the least hurtful way possible. By the way most of the time you're getting punished for what happened or what was thought and not the fact that you told the truth about it.

Just let then know that telling the truth was the GOOD thing to do, although the the truth is sometimes pain full. Have you heard of the saying " shoot the messenger "?
If they are telling you that they have done something they should not have, then the punishment should still be seen through.
BUT give them the chance to say sorry, and if you think they mean it you both (should) will feel better.

It depends on the circumstances. Was it done in an effort to hurt the other person? If so then yes, I would punish for that. However sometimes people just need to hear the truth no matter how mean it may seem to everyone else.

telling the truth when asked is one thing, but "offering" truths should not necessarily be excused from some form of punishment. if a child feels they have free reign to say what they want just because its true, a lot of possible problems can result. sounds like a good opportunity to teach them about the meaning of the word "discretion".

yes, it is wrong to be punished for telling the truth. perhaps the punishment is deemed appropriate, because of the way the truth is told. instead of telling someone their breath smells like a sack of sh_t, they could be told about a new type of mouthwash. such as, i once had very bad breath until i tried "sewer breath b-gone".

I do not know the circumstances in your situation, however, I do not think anyone should be punished for being brutally honest.
