The similarities are that they both are monotheistic and they both claim to worship the God of the Bible.
The differences are too many to list but the most serious one is that Muslims don't believe that Jesus was the Son of God who died on a cross to pay our sin debt. They have a works based method of appearing righteous in God's eyes.

The most obvious similarity is that both take the Torah, Psalms, and Gospels to be canonical.
The most obvious difference is that Islam claims Jesus was a Prophet, and Mohammad was the Last Prophet, whilst Christianity claims that Jesus was the Son of God, and Mohammad is a false prophet.
They both originated as sects of Judaism, turning upon Jews, when they were rejected by mainstream Judaism.
They both operate on the principle that the entire world must convert to their faith.
Both claim to believe in one God, but Islam also permits the worship of a Goddess. [Whilst Mohammad later repudiated those verses, they were not removed from the Q;'ran, unlike other passages that contradicted the Pillars of Faith.]
The Bible --- sacred text of Christianity -- can be translated into any language. The Q'ran claims that rendering it in any other language, will result in a corruption of the text. The practical side effect of these beliefs is that Christians can be, and are, more critical of their sacred text, than Muslims are. Likewise, Christians tend to know the contents of their sacred text better than Muslims do.
Theology is the major reason for new Christian denominations.
Politics is the major reason for the new Islamic sects.
[The cause of the split between Shi'ite and Sunni Muslims, is who the legitimate successor of Mohammad was. The cause of the split between The Holy Roman Catholic and Apostolic Church and the Church of England, was whether or not divorce is scriptural permissible.]

Both read the Old Testament. Jews, Christians and Muslims all believe the Old Testament.
Muslims and Jews do not read the New Testament.
It is the Old Testament that is similar.
The difference is that Muslims still believe fiercely in revenge and also they believe in the teachings of Mohamed.
Another difference is they believe in a holy war between God's people and all unbelievers. And to them all Christians are unbelievers because of there lifestyle, their sins, and capitalism.

Abraham was promised by God that he would be the father of all nations and that through his seed the saviour would come. The problem is: He had 2 sons. Jesus came from Isaac's genetic lineage. Muhammad came from Ishmael's. That is how it all got started. Each religion claims Gods promise through one of Abraham's sons. The problem is: God only made the promise for one of them. I believe it was for Isaac.
