Well, Lori, why not you just make the first move? People are sometimes weird, you know? They're afriad of you-even if you're a nice person. When they see the wheelchair though, they get afraid.
If you just go up and talk to them then maybe they will see that you are just like everybody else. And if they still don't want to talk to you just remember that they are rude and one day somebody will not want to talk to them and they will know what it feels like.

Hi Lori. Some people get uncomfortable speaking with people with disabilities. I guess they feel guilty that they can walk or something crazy like that! Anyway, I would make good eye contact, and maybe break the ice with an off-color joke about being in a wheel chair. I think it might shock the people into reality and they will realize how stupid they are being.
p.s. My mom taught me long ago to treat EVERYONE the same, so I treat everyone like they are in wheelchairs ;).

Hi, Lori... I really don't think people don't want to tlk to you because you are in a wheelchair... Most people now adays are either too busy or too self-absorbed to have time for anyone. I am not in a wheelchair and most people pass me by every day... I notice however that when I am walking my dog lots of people stop to talk and pet my dog. Maybe a pet would help...most people need an ice-breaker to start conversation---I am one of them. Always remember that we all face challenges...some overweight, others bulimic, tall, short, you name it... Lori, dont let that take away from who you're as a person and make the best of your challenge in life. God Bless.

People just have issues today, everybody is looking for perfect world, looking with their eyes and not there hearts it's all about Money,Power and Respect so if you had any of those, wheelchair or not you would have a lot of friends all kinds of people would talk to you. besides I'm talking to you.
My girlfriends opinion is that it's hard to approach someone that is handicap in anyway because you dont want them to feel offended. Like staring asking what happen could have been a terrible experince that they may not want to remember. which I also think could be the cause. It all depends on the person.

Some people are uncomfortable with wheelchair bound people or any type of handicap. They don't know quite what to say. I think they are afraid of saying something wrong or stupid. You could probably start a lot of conversations with just a smile and a hello. That is sort of an invitation to come into your space. Don't give up on folks. There are a lot of really nice people out there. They just don't think sometimes. Maybe you could right an article about it and send it to your local paper. That would help people be more aware of their actions. Keep smiling.

Many people feel insecure and afraid that they may not know what to say. I have a friend that sits in the Wal Mart stores that has to abide in a wheel chair. For the first month, I wanted to talk to him but I felt I didn't know what to say other than the basic hello but after I got over my insecurity, I made one great friend. Don't get discouraged when people don't talk just smile and speak. Some people have their own insecurities and ares that they have to overcome.

Hey Lori,
This is very sad that people dint talk to you but dint ever think they dint talk to you because you are in a wheel chair, They dint talk to you because they are stupid and dont know that being on a wheelchair does not mean that you are different from others. I think you should not try and burn your self out trying to get people to talk to you i think people will come to you by themselves if they really know who you are. keep smiling and be happy

It probably isnt that people don't like talking to you so much as they think that they are to busy to talk in general. I see many people that move to fast and don't take enough time for the really important things, like saying something nice to someone you don't really know. (Me included)
When you do try to talk to people, don't expect one reaction or another, just accept them for who and how they are. Maybe that person will be a one time aquaintance, and maybe they'll be a life long friend.

I'm very sorry if people have mistreated you, but maybe you should hang out with a nicer group of people. It seems like the people who aren't talking to you aren't worth your time or effort anyway.
