I think a lot of parents make the mistake of trying to be their children's best friend. Don't get me wrong, having fun with your kids is a great thing... But being a parent means sometimes you have to lay down the law.
Parents first, friends second.

As a substitute teacher who has been in the classroom a lot now, I hate it when parents do not expect their children to respect their teachers. It makes learning nearly impossible when a child does not respect the teacher, especially when the parents don't care how the child treats the teacher. I have had some really tough kids- you can tell which ones have parents that demand respect for themselves and other authorities from their kids, and which ones don't. I'd love to see those parents try to handle a class full of disrespectful children like their own- it would be quite funny to watch actually. Teachers work hard everyday and parents need to respect them by teaching their kids to respect them. It's just too hard on the teacher when the parents are against them or not backing them up- schools are very different now mainly because of the lack of respect for teachers and I don't think it's a positive different.

I'd punish them... I would like them to defend themselves, but showing the teacher was wrong, like civilized people! (if the teacher actually IS wrong). It is way too easy to scream and brag about everything...
I don't want the future to be full of brats just bitching about anything they don't agree on... these people that are always against authority (I mean always... just needing to fight someone to get noticed) are pathetic.
I think these parents surely want their kids to "be independent thinkers and not letting anyone stepping on them", but if they don't respect others (specially superiors) nobody will respect them neither.. and I really hope these parents really hug and kiss their kids as long as they can, because sooner than later they will only be able to talk to them with a crystal between them. Or maybe these kids don't get the attention they deserve from their parents and they want to get some in the school... and shouting the teacher is the way to get it.
Sorry, but independent thinkers, THINK! and argue respectfully... don't shout. And this kids desperately need to learn to defend themselves in the civilized way....and need parents, not pets.

It would depend on why they were yelling at him in the first place.
There are many circumstances where I would back my child and many where I would back the teacher and punish my child for being rude.
Generally it is disrespectful and I would think it wrong if any parent that thinks it is ok, but as I have already said, there can be mitigating circumstances. You would have to be more specific and give us a scenario!

I'd say most of the time the teachers deserve it. Often I think kids should be punished for not yelling at teachers. I'm really not joking here. incase you thought I was being funny.

I am a teacher and I will be honest - we are not perfect. We try very hard to do a good job, but no one is perfect. It would be nice it children were taught to respect adults regardless of right or wrong. If the situation was wrong, the parents can handle it in an adult manner, but children should be taught to respect teachers, grandparents, custodians, any adult they come in contact with.

I think that they are teaching their children that it is okay to disrespect an authority figure. In the short run, it will bite them in the ***, since they are the child's foremost authority figures, but in the long run, I feel sorry for the child, who will grow up to have some serious issues. If only we could make people take a test before they become parents...

It depends on the situation, but no matter who was right or wrong the kid should still be told that disrespecting a teacher is unacceptable and to never take matters into their own hands.

I think they should not be surprised when in 40 years time the kids turn around and ship them off to an old folks home because they have no respect for their elders.

They are setting a great example for a future of disrespecting authority. Delinquency is surely in their future. I've seen this in my kids' schools. it's a shame that it isn't taken more seriously. Kids have no respect anymore.
