If a person asks a question, and mispells a few words in it, why do people feel it necessary to correct them in a rude manner? Most of the times these responses do not even attempt to answer the askers question. Besides two points, what are you gaining? If a person really wants to show off how well they can spell , cant they do so in a nice way, while also answering the askers question?

Glad I could give the bashers another chance to correct my grammar. Another thought : You may gain two points, but you're wasting one of your answers for the day.

I don't have a clue. I guess it makes people feel better about themselves to point out something about someone else. By the way, you misspelled misspells. Gosh I feel good now! (Just playing)

We don't gain anything.

However, considering there is a "Check Spelling" button directly next to the text box, I find it insulting that people ask me questions with words spelled incorrectly.

Also, for example, when I see a question that reads "...yeah, sorry, typo", I don't understand why the asker doesn't simply correct the error. It's actually much more difficult to type the new sentence, than it would be to make the correction.

I take the time to ensure my answers are well written. I would hope that the askers could do the same, as a matter of mutual respect.

And, for the record, I also work to make my answers reasonable...I won't lie to you and tell you that I never offer sarcasm, but for the most part, I work to address the question with a reasonable answer.

Maybe it frustrates people to see that 1) the educational system failed or is failing that person, and/or 2) that they are too lazy to use spell check. Communication is important in the world...written, verbal, gestures, etc. If you cannot spell, you will not be understood sometimes and often times not taken very seriously...a post or letter with a lot of misspellings (not just typos) tends to take away from the message the writer was trying to convey, and people will often get more caught up in the lack of spelling or grammar ability.

Definitely people should point out such things in a nice/polite way, and answer the poster's question if it is clear what the question is. There's no reason to be rude or ugly to someone because they cannot spell or write well, but it's okay to encourage them to do better.

I would be more kind if it wasnt so blatantly horribly wrong.

Like when people write a question and you can hardly read it because it's a bunch of abbreviations and shortcuts. That's just another language!

Plus, there is a free spell check built right in. I think it bothers me most when they do it on purpose. A mistake here and there is fine. No problem. But you wonder about the sincerity of some of these people who ask questions that are a bunch of garbled up letters.

They do it because there is a spell check, and it irks them that people would actually post something with out first editing it. They probably feel that the person was careless about their question and figure it deserves a careless answer.

I am one of the people that this can sometimes annoy, IF it is done in an oh-so-careless manner. However, I would never leave a response without attempting to answer the question posed.

I rarely bash misspelling, but there are questions written so badly that I cannot decipher what is being asked. With the little blue "check spelling' box right above this answer box, what is the trouble in appearing, if not intelligent, at least literate? We all put a piece of ourselves out there when we write anything. Why, oh why, do so many put such a feeble foot forward here...or do they present themselves to all in this manner....good luck trying to get a job!

I try to do this myself. I try to make a joke or whatever about it, while spelling as well as I can. However, I sort of understand some people's ire over it. For one thing, there is a 'check spelling' opportunity there.

Also, there are some people who, when they went to school, they worked hard, they studied, and they took their classes fairly seriously, for the most part. Meanwhile, we all know the kids that goofed off all the time, showing off, and acting like morons in front of everyone. That's fine. That in itself is okay with me, if that's what they want. But when some people like that come to a website, where I write with fair ease and careful attentiveness, and write like they just don't give a rat's behind about it. The carelessness just grates on a person's nerves, or at least people that have worked hard to be who they are.

I noticed this. I know that there's sometimes a spell checker on forums, but geez. It's really not that serious. It's a place to be informal. You're not at school or the office. As long as I have no problem reading what you wrote, I'm fine. But, if yor mesage loks lik dis, din u nede 2 use the spel chek. What you write shouldn't look that bad, though I still wouldn't rudely tell the person off.

I do correct spellings but with a smiley face at the end :)
so they know I'm nice really, I am quite picky about wrong spellings but I don't just answer to tell someone how to spell, unless of course they're asking for a spelling, I'll answer the question too.
I think some people are just a bit poopy :)

Are you talking about your boss or your school teacher? Hmm... sounds like them. Anyway, I had the same experience... but in a different way... I am not good in math and the person I was talking to is... I asked a question and he laughed at me like crazy... but I am pretty good in spelling and he's not... so, I told the guy that my weakness in math is probably the same as his in spelling to make him realize that he's offending me.

I think we cannot control other people's manner... maybe, you can tell them straightforward that you would really appreciate if they will not be rude to you... also, don't feel bad because alot of people are really not that great in spelling. Just take their corrections, store them in your memory... it might be useful in the future. Also, maybe... you might have to ask the people whom you think you can trust and not ill-mannered.

Perhaps it's a form of road rage! Many angry people today respond without thinking. However, sometimes a misspelled word changes the meaning of the message. There's a great book called Eats Shoots and Leaves (sorry, no underline ability)about the importance of commas!
