Okay, here's the deal. My dad has been in the hospital for the past 5 months. He FINALLY got the liver transplant and double hernia surgey he needed in April however now his kidneys r suffering for the damage done durning the wait. He also has diabetes. The hospital is almost an hour away from the whole family, mom included, so we can't all get to see him everyday. He is going CRAZY with cabin fever and he gets depressed and lonely. What do you buy him for fathers day. I need something REALLY good for under $20.00. Something that will make the days none of us can get there a little more cheerful. All ideas welcome!!

He has a TV and VCR in his room. We've all already buried him under movies he has about 15 puzzel magazines, too many books to count and has said he'll kill us if we show up with one more ballon, bear or flower!

i have recently gotten very depressed from medical problems. part of it i think is when people can't do what they have always been able to they feel worthless and broken. he really needs a gift that would require him to take care it so he can feel like he is doing somthing. i don't know if he has a green thumb or anything, but you might want to consider a plant (not flowers) that he can water everyday and take care of and watch it grow. better yet if the window ledge in his room is big enough get a dwarf vegetable plant that would grow easily in a pot and then tell him you expect to be able to eat some of the vegetables soon. that would give him soom sort of goal and be able to focus on something else even if only for a few moments each day. if he like animals you could top if off with a visit from pets on wheels (it's free) most cities have some type of service like this, just ask the nurses.
good luck with everything i hope your dad comes home soon!

My advice is to bring fathers day to him. Anything that you and your family would do, do it at the hospital. Special dinner? Bring a fold up table and chairs and set the table as you would at home. Bring things from you home that would help him feel like he is at home. Pictures, table cloth, curtains, statues anything that you can put up fast. Bring his robe from home and take him for a walk around the hospital if possible (in a wheelchair if needed) and while someone has him occupied decorate the room as much as you can to look like home. When someone brings him back as they bring him in say welcome home dad. During dinner and presents do not ask "Are you OK" he probably just wants to be home and if he was you would not ask this. When everything is over leave a few things that remind him oh home so that he can feel like home is closer. Good luck!!!

I happened onto this page and your question caught my eye.
how about taking some pictures of family , friends, your home
anything that he would like to see outside the hospital, include some silly mug shots to make him smile. After developing put into an inexpensive photo album, maybe decorate it or not.
I am a grandmother and would welcome pictures of the family to look at when they are not there.
Hope your father regains his health.

Give both your Dad and yourself a gift. On video tape, interview friends and family about what your father means to everyone...or go with a theme like "What is the funniest thing you have ever seen my Dad do?" and then interview your Dad about his life memories. It will be a priceless gift for all.

Record a dvd or a tape with your family saying how much you guys love him. You can also buy him lots of no-sugar candies, my dad is diabetic too and loves them (actually, ALL OF US, specially Brach's...*drools*) and put them in a very nice basket with letters from the whole family.
Hope your dad gets well soon :)

How bout a family picture of all of you and with it some flowers. It doesn't have to be a professional family picture just get any digital camer or disposable camera and just have some take a picture of you all. You can also look into getting one of those serene waterfalls to plug. I hope your dad gets better soon.

I know I would like something to keep my mind busy. like a soduko puzzle or a electric games that either plays chess or poker.
When you are in bed you have a lot of time to kill- It would be nice if he could surf the net and video conference you and your family..... but that would be more than $20
I am sure he will love anything you give him in person

Write a sweet and upbeat letter to him. Maybe the whole family can each write one of their own and include it in a home made, handcrafted Get Well card. I hope he recovers well.

Your presence and your time. Trust me on this one. These things can't be purchased. Not yesterday and not today or any other day. My father died of pancreatic cancer in Feb of this year. My only wish? I wished that I would have spent more time with my father while he was alive.
