I have been cutting down on cigs, I used to smoke a pack a day, and now I smoke like 4 cigs a day...but since I have been cutting down it seems like I am coughing up chunks of my lung! I understand that we couhg up phlegm, but I am also coughing up little parts of my lung. Has ANYONE experienced this before? I've heard some people say they have...but I still feel so alone, and scared. I am planning on quitting, but honestly, if this is a sign of lung cancer, then why quit? I'm gonna die anyway. Someone let me know if they've experienced this or has known someone who has...it will really ease my mind.

you will seem worse, the numbing effects of the chemicals in the tobacco is not there anymore, so you will start to feel your lungs again, the stuff you are coughing up is particles of the crap you have been putting in your lungs, chunks of dried phlegm and other pieces of stuff your lungs are trying to get rid of, just quit and you will see a dramatic difference in about six months to a year, after a while if you have not damaged lungs to severely you should recover completely!

Your body needs between three to six months to stop producing the excess mucus needed to protect itself from a foreign substance, in this case, nicotine. Once your body realizes it no longer needs to fight against that, it will slowly cut back on mucus production. The time needed for this is also directly related to how long you have been smoking or continue to smoke. Of course no amount of advice will ever substitute a medical examination and opinion. If you really want to quit the one and only person that needs to be absolutely convinced is yourself. As long as a smoker continues hanging on to any reason, no matter what, nothing in the world will get you to stop.
Begin by examining not only the health aspects, but your appearance, the smell in your hair, clothes, the stained teeth, the bad breath, the wrinkles...then you can make the decision that´s right for you. As to the pieces of your lungs, get a medical opinion first. Good Luck

I used to smoke a lot, and i still smoke a lot (10 cigs a day)... and i've never experienced those symptoms. Anyway, try to have a healthier life, drink a lot of water, eat a lot of fruit, make some cardio excercise and go and have some medical analysis, cancer is the worst form to die, specially because it´s very very slow and agressive. but anyway, if u find you have some kind of desease there is alternative medicine, really good, and there are some real life cases of severe and fatal cancer issues that have been cured.
And the option to quit or not smoking is up to you.

How do you know it is part of your lung? I say it is good incentive to quit. I actually just quit 2 weeks ago. I went from a pack a day down and down over about a month, and then I just stopped. The first few days were rough, but Now I forget that I used to smoke every freakin hour.

Some people find themselves coughing more after quitting smoking than before. Don't fret--the cilia that line the lungs are working to clean out all the tars and other debris in your lungs.

Keep up the good work! I quit 5 years ago, and it was one of the best things I ever did for myself.

If you remained concerned about your cough, see your doctor.

Yes it is normal. Your lungs are trying to get rid of all the tar that is stuck in there. Once you quit totally you will continue to cough up yuck but after about a month you will not cough as much and you will start to feel better. Good luck!

I have no idea about the chunks. But was a smoker for 9 years, smoked about 3 packs a day. Quit 3 years ago and I am doing great. I suggest cold turkey.

Its your lung clearing out...because you cutback the lungs are trying to heal themselves...I hear it take about 6 months before your lungs start turning pink again....so let that bad stuff come up.

Good Luck

with slowing down your body is trieing to get rid of all the crap that is built up. quit all the way and watch the chunks spew. it will slow down but it will take awhile for the body to get rid of the stuff thats not suppose to be there. when activally smoking the body thinks its suppose to be there (nicotine addiction) when you quit it says what the hell is this stuff in here and its says get out.

Dont worry, you have two whole lungs. You might just be coughing up some of one of them, but there is always plenty to spare.
