I have to fly into D.C. unexpectedly. I am looking into flights but am confused by the two airports (Reagan and Dulles). Are they close to each other or is one better than the other (I'll be ending up in downtown D.C.). Are they close to each other? Help? Thanks....

Reagan is much more convenient to downtown DC. It is right across the Potomac and has a Metro subway station. Cabs are also cheap - DC regulates them by zone (one good thing about having the politicians in town). You will be much closer to where you want to be.

Dulles is out in suburban Virginia. You either have to take a not-cheap cab ride, rent a car, or take a bus to the Falls Church Metro station -and then travel into DC on the Metro.

BTW, the Metro is quite good for a big city subway.

If you have business in Dc the best airport is National (DCA). Dulles is about an hour in a cab from DC and a hefty price If you fly into National you can get onto the subway without even going outside. The subway is fast, clean, relatively cheap and has stops all over town. If you have to go to downtown DC take the subway rather than a cab because even though cabs are regulated in DC, the National airport is actually in Virginia. So you will pay via a different fare structure. Once you get into DC take a taxi where you want to go if necessary. You can view the metro subway mat at this web site:

If you plan on staying in the Metro DC area then Reagan National (DCA) is your best bet. You be able to grab your bags, walk out to the Metro station right from baggage claim, and catch a train headed for downtown (see link #1 below). Dulles (IAD) is about 26 miles from downtown DC and you'll wind up taking a cab, bus, or other means of shared transportation to get there. Just keep in mind if you're not familiar with flying in and out of Reagan, the airlines have a strict "30 minute rule". You will not be able to get out of your seat for any reason within 30 minutes of arrival or after take-off. If you do the flight will divert to another airport for security reasons. Whatever you decide to do, DC is a beautiful city so please make time to see some of the many sites in our nation's capitol :))

Dulles and Reagan are about 20 minutes apart by cab. Reagan is closer to downtown, but Dulles is easier to fly into and easier to navigate out of. I'm a flight attendant for United Express. They fly into Dulles. US Airways flies into Reagan.

Reagan National is DEFINITELY the airport to fly in and out of. It's easy, and Dulles is far out in Virginia and the traffic is a nightmare.

There is no question that DCA (Regan) is the most convienent. I would even rather us BWI than Dullas. There is at least public transpertation at BWI.
