There is a show called Clean Sweep on TLC. I think being organized is much easier when you eliminate things you haven't used. If you haven't worn it or used it in a year get rid of it. The flylady.com mentioned by someone else can be very hepful too. One thing I find is don't be so overwhelmed that you don't start. Meaning just do a tiny corner, a desk top etc. Each day pick a different spot. Have a box marked things to put in the trash, thing for charity, things to keep. Be brutual. Good luck.

What needs to be organized? Your whole house? One room in your home? First thing, if it is clutter related. Go through each room one at a time and make piles: Keep, Toss, Donate. If I'm on the right track let me know. Or do you mean unorganized as far as appointments, paper and writing out bills?

TOWELS AND CLOTHES: I personally buy clothes in two maximum 3 color choices. White, black and Blue I can mix and match most of them and only have two loads of laundry to do. Whites and Blacks/blues. YOu can choose yr own color preferences.
I got this out of someone who only wore whites, and she only had to do one load of whites! EASIER ON LAUNDRY DAY and piling clothes in same stack plus it looks more organized. aNOTHER TIP laundry detergent! You dont have to invest all yr salary on that. Buy BORAX poweder which is cheap (laundry section at grocery stores). It does a superb job on cleaning, and leaving no residue and all soft. It only costs for large box 2.99 and you dont even need softener which has been shown to cause even cancer from chemicals, same with detergents. It will save yr skin too , using Borax as the only laundry detergent.
Buy baskets and separate trinkets, kitchen stuff, bathroom things, etc by category. Just dump yr things in its apropiate basket and you are done. Many stores sell beautiful organizing baskets (World Market is one).
Kitchen: Use only plates and utensils to bare essentials and as soon as you are done using them put them in the dishwasher. When you are done filling itup just take plate and utensil as you need it out there. Immidiately rinse it when done eating and just stack it neatly in sink until you empty dishwasher and then reload it.
Keep your cupboards organized by labeling too. Separate breakfast food and snacks in one area. Another for lunch items and other for dinner. Do not have a ton of htings you dont use out, store all that you dont use (even that grandma's lovely glass bowl that just takes room). Keep only what you use on a daily basis handy. THE REST AWAY AND OUT OF SITE.
Dont throw things on the floor. It looks terrible. And if you just day by day get used to "dumping" yr things in the baskets nothing will look unorganized. But if you pile all on floor it will be much harder to clean up later after about a week.
THE LESS CLUTTER YOU HAVE THE EASIER TO CLEAN AND DUST.
Have just basic furniture that is needed so you also have more free and ample room to walk through and look clean.
A lot of cd's? buy a multiple 100 cd changer electronic device and store them all instead of having them everywehre so you cant find the cd you r looking for.
Instead of decorating tables and what not with trinkets, buy tapestries and creative and attractive things to hang on walls with one motif. Keep the tables free of much if possible just under 5 things if a large table, to decorate or as decorating goes. DONT CLUTTER YOUR TABLES it looks cleaner and organized this way.
SHELVES for books and alphabetize them into order. Shelves work great because they are up and away from trampling over anything when you can just put it up and away.
Keep one place for all yr cleaning tools.
AND DONT LET GO FOR MORE THAN A DAY IF YOU HAVE A SLIGHT MESS or you will regret the hours of work to clean up later on.
All food wasted in garbage disposer immidiately. Rinse plates immidiately.
Trash out every day on yr way to work or school.
