Pranayama (Devanagari: प्राणायाम, prāNāyāma) is a breathing exercise originally expounded by Patanjali, an ancient Hindu philosopher and yogi, in his Yoga Sutras, a text on various yogic technicques.
While there is credible evidence (mostly as anecdotes from its regular practitioners) to believe that Pranayama helps acquire calmness of mind during its practice (like any other kinds of meditational techniques), any supernatural/semi-magical powers attributed to it are not scientifically proven.
Though the Hindu philosophers starting from Patanjali have developed a whole range of arcane philosophies around Pranayama and other yogic asanas, it has never been beyond criticism. Carvaka, the ancient Indian materialist philosopher, for instance, was a stringent critic of the yogic-practitioners.

No, but with a simple search of the term you can find info like this:
"Pranayama is control of Breath". "Prana" is Breath or bio energy in the body. On subtle levels prana represents the pranic energy responsible for life or life force, and "ayama" means control. So Pranayama is "Control of Breath". One can control the rhythms of pranic energy with pranayama and achieve healthy body and mind.

This is a word commonly used in yoga, which is composed of two terms.
(praaNa + aayaama = praaNaayama).
A simplistic explanation or understanding, one can consider this as a process that helps one regulate breath.
praaNaayama is the 4th limb of yoga.
