Being scammed by the collection agency. If you have an account in collections, please be careful what you say to them and how much you pay. Ask questions, find out if they purchased the paper, if they did, get a settlement or talk to an attorney and see if they can collect from you legally, they may not have a license to do so. Also, if they purchased it and are charging you interest it is illegal. If it is new debt, offer to make payments if you have to. If you are making payments then they cannot come after you legally and if they threaten that you no longer have to pay your bill, they are in violation of the fdcpa and you can get out of the dbt. You can also sometimes go to the original creditor and see if they will make a deal with you. There is so much to think about when paying off debt and collectors range from horrible to really good! BE CAREFUL!
