Having collected cookbooks for decades, I've discovered that the VINTAGE 'from scratch" recipe cookbooks are the best. Betty Crocker, Pillsbury, Fannie Farmer, McCalls, Better Homes and Gardens.....what makes these staples of the American kitchen and why aren't todays cookbooks as good?

I have a Betty Crocker set that belonged to my grandmother. It has the best recipes! The stuff people used to eat is amazing. I still use it when I'm looking for something different and decadent.

Better homes and gardens cookbook, the joy of cooking, the best of bridge but the best cookbooks are the ones from small communities since people submitt their favourite recipes and they have been tried and used for years.

I love the big Italy and Tuscany books. they also give the history of the foods and wonderful pictures and artwork! When I use cookbooks I need to see pictures.
