It is almost certain that the power supply unit is in what is termed Hiccup mode which is simply the power supply shutting down when a fault is sensed , of course when the set is switched off the fault can not be seen so the set switches on again whereupon the fault is sensed again so the set switches off , ad infinitum , hence the flashing power light ! Usual cause is short cct line out transistor or transformer . That my friend is about as far as one can go using guess work !!.

Before you throw the TV away or spend a lot of money trying to get it fixed, try this: (it worked for me) Unplug the TV and unhook the cable and put the TV in another room (so you won't be tempted to throw it in the trash...) and WAIT 24 HOURS. I'm serious. Evidently, the FLASHING RED LIGHT OF DEATH indicates the TV is in 'standby mode' and the standby mode evidently times out at 24 hours. Be SURE and wait the full 24 hours. Then plug the TV back in, hook up the cable, and turn the TV on using the on set power button. Wa-Laaaa! It turns on....amazingly enough. At least this worked for me, twice in fact, until I figured it out. Use the REMOTE to turn your TV on and off, not the on-set power button, as this evidently can trigger this 'standby mode". One more word of advice...do NOT buy another Toshiba TV.... Hope this helps!

alot of these newer computerized chassis will throw a "blink code" when a problem occurs, it tries to help diagnose the area inside...many sets i service will do this .These code sequences are found in the service $$$ manuals.
