Why do I do so poorly on tests, especially finals? I study hard, I don't get nervous, and I don't rush on the tests. I take the time to read each question carefully. I think about the answer I've given and I come out thinking I've done pretty well. Why then do I get C's and D's and lately F's on my tests? I can't get these kind of grades, especially in two years when I'll be in college. Can anyone help me to understand why I do so poorly? Does anyone have any advice for me? Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

only you can find a solution to that problem,,
but to help ,i tell u this:

1)
%%%%%
reduce the amount of pressure that comes from the finals ,,,(i mean the Huge book u study in so little time),,,by studying daily through the year ,,,
that is an excellent way to recieve high marks ,,i mean A's

2)
%%%%%
you have to understand that there is 2 main elements for studying :

1-Understanding the subject
u must understand your lessons by listening to your teachers in classes (for example i used to sleep in english class ,when i try to study it ,i find very difficult to get everything in ,,,so i started to pay attetion ,,it helped ,,,,,i used get like C- ,,the last grade was B+ )
and try to develop intrests in subjects u find booring ,u will later have fun studying it ,,,thats what happened to me too in english too
2- Memorizing what is written
this problem comes from distractions while studying ,and not being able to focus ,these distractions come from the person himself ,or the enviroment.
(for example some people like to listen to music while they are studying ,,or maybe have to much noise around them from kids or a train or something ,,,,,,,,,that doesnt help anyone to focus)

3)
%%%%%
u have to know the right way to study ,it is 4 steps:
1-Quick reading for each lesson before starting to memorize to define what is the exact subject
2-Memorizing (in history,geography...etc),or (solving questions in maths,physics...etc) ,or in another words STUDYING.
3-Testing your self after each lesson ,to make sure u got everything ,,,nothing has slipped through ur mind
4-Revision after u finish the whole BOOK ,by going through quick questions from each lesson ,question that cover the subject of the lesson.

If u do this i gurantee u get straight A's

u also might have a specific problem in some subjects ,u have to look at your exams ,and u have to know your mistakes ,,,,define what is wrong ,,try to fix it

Possibly if you see the test afterwards and see where you made your mistakes, this would help you to understand why. If you did not know the answer, well that is one reason why, but depending on why the answer was marked wrong - you need to look closely at the test, and as well talk to your teachers - and that is much easier now than in college.

If you find you knew the answer, but just forgot - that is the "stress" so you need to deal with that issue - if you find your in need of some sort of stress reduction - try rewarding yourself with a chocolate bar, make sure you eat a good breakfast.

There are also some teas that will help you relax.

The best place to start though, is to talk to your teachers.

The first thing I would recommend is that you sit down with your instructors in the subjects in which you're struggling and talk to them - explain what you're doing, and ask them if there's anything that they are going over that you need to better comprehend, or if there is some other issue preventing you from offering better answers.

The second thing I'd suggest - strongly - is that you go see a doctor. This will give you the opportunity to see if you've suffered some neurological event that's affecting you, or if you have a learning disability or AD/HD that hasn't yet been diagnosed. (If you've been doing really well in your classes and you have AD/HD, believe me, it will go undiagnosed unless something dramatic happens.)

I suggest you do it soon, because if you are interested in going to a good college, you want to be in a position where you can pick up your GPA sooner than later. Good luck.

It is great that you care so much about your grades!! Contact your local community college they sometimes offer classes on how to prepare and take tests....... Maybe the problem is that you are thinking to much about the questions and second guessing yourself..... usually your first choice is the correct one.... Good Luck I'm sure that you will do fine in the future keep your chin up!!

Maybe your not studying the right way. Have you looked into getting a tutor? Maybe they can help you with some new study techniques you don't know of that might help you remember the material better.

you could just have test anxiety. be sure to get a full nights rest and eat a good breakfast before taking your test. also, think of a clever song or acronym to remember dates or something if you need to. just relax!
