For instance, if I threw my kitty in the pool to save him from a burning building, would he be able to stay afloat? I'm not interested in theory. I want to know if anyone has actually seen a cat swim. Thanks!

Yes, cats can swim; quite well, in fact. Every mammal knows how to swim. Swimming is instinctive behavior--creatures are born knowing how to do it. Even newborn humans can swim.

You're cat won't sink if you throw it in the pool to save it from a burning house. Your cat will know how to swim just fine. It might not be exactly graceful, but it will be ok.

Incidentally, some house cats like water. The vast majority despise water, but every once in a while, you will find a cat who likes taking a swim, or jumping in its owner's bathtub, or sticking its head under a running faucet. The behavior might be a genetic throwback to its tiger cousins. Tigers absolutely love water and will splash and play in a pond like a little kid in a wading pool.

Yes I have seen a cat swim. When he was a kitten he already knew how to swim. Someone threw him in the pool. Which was really sad. If you think that the reason cats are afraid of water just because they can`t swim that isn`t the reason at all. They think water is dirty. They think they are clean when they are dry.

Yes. Our cat used to swim -- mostly across the goldfish pond we had in the front yard. That cat was strange in a number of ways -- we decided he thought he was a dog because he grew up with dogs and had some very un-cat-like behaviours! Surprisingly, he could swim quite well, but he sure looked awful when he got out with all his hair plastered down!

Yes, cats can swim and actually do so very well. My friend has a bengal that swims regularly in the pool and jumps in both the tub and shower.

Yes. Seen a video of a cat swimming before. Didn't look like it enjoyed it much! I've also seen large cats swim, you know, on National Geographic and such.

They can swim, don't worry. They may not go to a beach, get a tan, and jump in, but they can swim. After all, a beach looks to them like the most enormous litter box in the world! Now you know why you see dogs, but never cats at the beach.

cats are better swimmers than dogs.
yes my cat had the opportunity to swim in a swimming pool.
a very little child once asked can cats swim?
a very irresponsible adult answered yes they can.
this child was surprised to hear this because he had been told his whole life that cats didn't like water.
so this child did an experiment to see if uncle Robert's cat can swim in grandma's pool.

the experiment ended with three children being grounded for a week.

yes, I have seen a cat swim. It fell into my friend's pool and swam to the edge to get out. I don't think many cats like to swim, but they can.

yes cats can swim. I've seen it when my cat fell in the pool (he had climbed onto me when I had my foot on the edge and was laying on a floatie). Also tigers like to swim.
