The practice of Scientology is nothing more than the basic rituals of ceremonial magick, and can be clearly found in the writings of Aleister Crowley.
The theology of Scientology was borrowed from a plethora of other sources. All El Ron did, was wrap them together into a coherent story, and sell it for more than he would get from his book publisher.
As to how people can believe it, to quote the other "founder" of a religion based on science fiction: "One person's religion is another person's belly laugh".
In religion, proof counts for nothing.
The historical accuracy of Judaism hinges on whether or not the events of Exodus 18-20 took place. Thus far, there is no evidence to support those claims.
The historical accuracy of Christianity depends upon whether or not Jesus was crucified. The only non-christian references that might refer to Jesus are from Josephus --- which probably is latter interpolation. Tacitus has a reference to Kristos, that may or may not refer to followers of Jesus Christ. The letter of Pliny the Younger, to Emperor Trajan appears to be a later forgery. There are some references in Rabbinical writings to a Jesus, but it is not clear if an individual who lived in the first century AD, or first century BC is meant. [Their writings do have extensive coverage of a Bar-Jesus, who lived and died in the first century before Christ.]
Wicca is demonstrably less than a century old, yet its mythology claims a history of millenia.
The Cargo Cults of the Pacific Ocean are probably the best exmple of belief despite proof to the contrary.

It was started by a science fiction writer who used to take excursions on boats out in the ocean with young boys. A child molesting science fiction writer, would you want to join that club? Yes, they are a cult, and regardless of the population of their celebrity following, they are way off center. Celebrity endorsement does not mean it's right, safe or normal. The majority of celebs join up for drug rehabilitation or a "spin doctor" to get them out of some ruckus they have caused. It is a clique just like any other strange group of people. For the love of Mike, they think our emotions come from dead aliens who were dropped into a volcano by an evil alien dictator who flew them all in a space ship hovering over the earth - sound like a science fiction author to you? Some of the members are very good people, and would probably be anyway if they had sought their drug rehabilitation elsewhere, but they give credit to their "church" rather than their own generosity for their fellow man/woman. Yes, be very, very afraid.

I don't know about hypnotism and brainwashing, but scientology seems like a load of fiction to me. Since L. Ron Hubbard was a sci-fi writer, that only reinforces my belief that scientology is only a cult/global scam.

Nothing Scientific about Scientology. As far as Fiction or Fact... L. Ron Hubbard was a science fiction author. Nuff said.

Scientology is as scientific as anything can reasonably be. The test for anything is to go and do/see for yourself. Suppose you involve yourself with Scientology and one day you find you have remembered your past lives as well, won't that settle the issue?
Science deals itself wth objective truths. Religion deals with subjective truths. In religion, you have to go and experience subjectively for yourself the validity of a particular dictum.
Bible, for example, says that Christ was born of virgin Mary. Do you believe that? Can that be scientifically proven?

Considering that the founder, L. Ron Hubbard, wrote science fiction for a living, I go more with the fiction aspect of it.
And I have probably pissed off a load of Scientologists in the process.

Scientology was actually founded as a bet. Hubbards friend bet him that he couldn't make up a religion and have people buy into it. Needless to say Hubbard won, and the people lost.

Scientology is just about as real as the Moose on Jupiter who are the deities of the Order of Zealous Meese.

It is a cult... and pretty much fiction... yet people in hollywood are kind of gullible.... look at Tom Cruise... he is a patron saint of Scientology. Americans worship Hollywood.. so what does that tell you about American society?
