I am an agnostic (that is, i neither know nor really care if god really exists). when involved in a religious discussion with christians, they almost always resort to quoting from the bible as some sort of proof of their argument. to me, that would be like quoting from a book of greek or roman or norse (or any other) book of mythology to prove the existance of their deities. if i don't believe in your god how is throwing quotes from your book about him going to sway me. what do i care what your god said if i don't believe in its existance, or even care if it exists? how does quoting from a book i consider as reliable as a Seussian nonsense poem help convince me your argument is sound? present your argument without quoting from the bible - if you can - and i will listen. i may still be skeptical when you are done, but at least i will kave learned more about your views on god than any specious book could teach me, and i will respect you and your opinions all the more.

A true christian does not need bible passages to show people that God exists... they show God's existence by living in the example of Jesus.

Anyone who quotes the Bible to prove to you that there is a God is following a false prophet.

Because they are completely stupid and idiotic, obviously. If you are trying to convince somebody that your way of thinking is better, you don't go to a book with your same opinions. You go find something that compares all religions or whatever the subject might be on. You'll NEVER want to hear proof of a religion right from the believers of a religion. You'll want cold hard proof that religion is right. (Which, might I add, does not exist anyway, therefore you cannot "prove" your religion is right.)

And if God is as "merciful" as he is supposed to be in the "Good Book", he's not going to give a **** whether you weren't following the "right path" all through life. So I say live life the way you think it's intended to be lived, do what you feel is right, and if that doesn't work for you then commit suicide. I'd rather commit suicide than steep as low as to go to Christianity.

I agree with you, I went to a Christian college and I came to see that oftentimes the people you're talking about really don't have much more "proof" or "back-up" and have to resort to the Bible because there really isn't (as far as I know) much more substantial, truly verifiable proof other than the Bible (which for most religious people is more than enough, but not for non-believers). A lot of people I know were raised never to really question their religion, and to accept the Bible as truth because that's what faith is about, but that only resulted in the Bible being their only form of proof. It's the ones who were able to truly question their religion from all aspects and still believe afterwards that have the most convincing arguments I think.

An excellent point and one that I stress when talking with other Pastors.
We, as Christians must learn the different ways of proving, or at least creating interest in, the Bible.
The life of Jesus Christ can be proven through ancient Jewish writings and different historians.
Want to learn about the great Exodus, there are other methods than the Bible.
It is even possible to prove the Bible, without mentioning it, through science.
Common sense and reason will work every time.

Well i hope the Christians that you have talked to didnt try to slam the bible down your throat, that doesnt get anyone saved. And i think the reason why us Christians or at least some of us do that is because they are not really quite sure how to have a discussion with someone when that someone always wants facts or proof.

1) The quotes cannot be "proof" unless a person believes in the Holy Bible.

2) And I agree that "shoving" the Bible down someone's throat does more to drive them away from the faith.

3) For true Believers of the Bible, the Word is the truth. Why? Because we have seen it manifest or have experienced it for ourselves (without the help of chemicals).

4) Although my church believes in "witnessing" and trying to convince Non-Believers to believe in the Bible and its precepts, I believe that Non-Believers will begin to believe by observing the behavior of Believers, and the manifestation of Miracles in their lives.

BOTTOM LINE: If you do not have any Believers around you that have peace, joy and happiness in their lives, it would be difficult for you to even want (what they have) faith. But, of course, a Miracle could happen in your life that would make you WANT to believe!

Although I did not quote the Word, our Holy Bible, could I at least say, "May GOD bless you" ?

Thats Cool Man, God is important in my everyday life. It's like if you don't belive thats your choice, i think that idea is Lost on christians, IT A CHOICE! I have a freind and he didn't believe in God or anything and He came to church with me and Paid his tithes and a few weeks later I consider it a Blessing he makes 3 to four thousand a pay check, where as he was barley making ends meet at Target. He's kind of leaning but it's becasue of what he is seeing in his life, not becasue of what I tell him. Christians need to remeber that, with love and kindness God has drawn me so thats how I try to draw others. For me praying every morning in the shower, asking God to help me Deligate my finacnes properly or even what to say to that woman he helps and I believe he does. My parents can't always be there to guid and Direct me but God can and I'm 25 I still need direction and guidence. Thats why I belive in God.

To the Xtians who are always trying to convert others, if you are afraid to do a personal, unbiased search of other faiths, is it fear or arrogance?

The OT is simply the collected folk tales of a wandering tribe, the NT has nothing to support it and the KJ which is the one most in use was 1. from one of the worst translations of the early texts and 2. KJ told his scribes "Make it poetry".

Good book, "Misquoting Jesus"

Didn't really answer your question but gives you some information to fight back with.

They quote from the bible because they believe that it's the truth. And if you hear that truth or understand it, you will believe too.

It may sound a little nutty. But that's why they quote from it. They don't see it as just another reference. They actually see it as an absolute truth.

Because people will believe anything now a days. in fact, if you look at it scientifically, the beer/wine that people drank back then had some mold growths from it that would actually cause hallucinations, now if you think about it in a scientifical method like that, or "logically" it makes no sense whatsoever. If people have to believe that to feel safe then so be it, but i think its a load of bullsh*t...
