Has anybody found relief for their TMJ wearing a splint?
Has a splint caused you more problems than relief?
I would like to hear your experiences with TMJ and any possible ways to relief the pain.
Thanks!

I have had tmj for years and years, I was told to have surgery and I opted not to and researched this extensively! A mouthguard can be made at the dentist to stop night grinding, it can be soft or hard. You can do jaw strengthening exercises to help the muscles because usually the muscles cause the joint problems unless you have degenerative bone loss problems. Alot of people tense their jaw and don't know it. One thing to do is to keep your teeth apart, then put your tongue to the roof of your mouth behind your front upper teeth, it's impossible to clench your jaw when your tongue is like that, also another good stop clenching thing to do is blow air out of your mouth like you were blowing bubbles. Also put your finger between upper and lower teeth in front of your mouth and rest your teeth gently on the finger. A strengthening one is to push your lower jaw out so your bottom front teeth are in a position to bite your upper lip. You can do moist heat on the jaw or ice. Ibuprofen and muscle relaxers help. Biofreeze or mineral ice applied right in front of the ears on the jaw line help. There is a very special pain creme called keto10gaba5lido10 (247) that you can apply right to the jaw that works wonders. Massaging the jaw helps too and actually chiropractors some of them are trained to adjust the jaw. You can try tens or ultrasound on the jawline as well to settle down irritations to the muscles. I think I have tried every treatment under the sun and those things are the ones that helped me most, I avoided surgery by doing these.

Mouthguards didn't work for me, they were very uncomfortable and painful and expensive!

I had a splint that I paid enormous amount of money for. Besides the fact that it wasn't the prettiest thing, it did help some I guess. I haven't worn it for years now, just because i changed the way I sleep. I bought an orthopedic pillow for about 26.00 and that helped more than anything because it kept my cervicle collar in alignment no matter which way I slept. I'm not a dentist, but i think it's a waste of money. For me it was, maybe someone else had better experiences.
