Is there some reason you can't get this information from another family member? If so, you should be able to go to the dept. of vital statistics (they look after registering deaths) and find out what happened and when.
My condolences to you -- both for the death and for the estrangement. One can't be cured, but hopefully, the other can.

i would suggest going to the coroners office or vital statistics

like cause of death or when they die...if its when they died check the newspaper 's obtiary's...
