OK....I can tell you what this word REALLY means. As I am English. I few people have made some mistakes here...These are the true meanings of the word...
1)A ****** in slang can mean a gay person (this is a particularly offensive term and should not be used.
A gay person can also be referred to as a fa.g. This is slightly less offensive. And perhaps a bit more camp sounding. Gay people sometimes use this word to refer to themselves in the same way that some black people use the N word.
2)A fa.g is British slang for a cigarette but NOT a ******.
3)A fa.g is a term used in British public schools (These a Private schools but in typical British fashion are called Public)
This refers to younger pupils that would skivvy and to jobs for the older boys.
A ****** is very occasionally used but is more pejorative.
4) A ****** is a traditional British food made from Pigs liver and offal.
5) In old English ******* were named after the Latin word for bundle of wood
Note in both the cases of a gay man and a British public school boy 'fa.g/******' is a masculine word and is not used when referring to a female... Though by it's use it is meant to de- muscularize the recipient ie the gay man etc....

If you are talking about the bad word, it means gay in a very offensive way, but it can also mean cigarret, or, in some schools at England, it means "servant".
This kind of servants are the ones chosen by older students to obey anything they are ordered to do
