In Acts 2:27 and 2:31 the King James Version seems to indicate that at His death, Jesus went to hell. Other versions have the word "Hades" in place of hell. Are hell and hades the same place?
There is a great deal of difference between hades and hell, although in 1611 when the King James Version was translated, "hell" was probably as good a concept as English would allow for the word "hades." By this we mean that the "unseen" world would have best been represented by the word "hell" in 1611.
But the facts are that hades and hell are two different places according to the Scriptures, and a distinction should be drawn between them.

Look at these two Scriptures:
Rev. 1:18
I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.
Luke 23:43
And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
How did Jesus get the keys of hell and death? What happened to him during the three days between His death and resurrection?
I believe He went to Hell and took the keys of death and hell away from the devil. Then He went to paradise and preached to all there, giving them them the opportunity to accept Him as Lord and Savior. Those that accepted (Probably all of them) were then escorted to heave to be with God for eternity. When this was done, He was then resurrected, as fulfillment of Scripture.
Hell in those two Scriptures is haides (greek)

In the scriptures in question, the actual Greek word is "Hades". Many Bible version translate the word as "Hell". But because there are some agreements over the exact meaning of the word, other version choose to just leave the greek word (in English alphabet) rather than translate it. Another word that the same is done with is the word "angel", which is the Greek word for "messenger". As there are arguments over when it just means a messenger, and when it means a spirit being, it is left untranslated in some scriptures.
How, to the real question -- did Jesus go to Hell? Yes, for a brief period. He descended into the part of Hades that was known as Paradise (which is not the same thing as heaven). That is where all the Old Testament believers were. He freed them from there and then took them with him to heaven. This happened between his death and his resurrection.

Back when the Apostle's Creed was written it seems to have been believed that he did by the inclusion of the phrase "he descended into hell" (see http://www.creeds.net/ancient/descendit.htm and http://www.reformed.org/documents/index.html?mainframe=http://www.reformed.org/documents/apostles_creed.html)
Some people think he did because of 1 Peter 3:19 where he preached to the souls in prison from the time of Noah, but it can be easily argued that that was some sort of hades, pre-hell state that existed before Jesus came.
I think it would make sense that Jesus went to hell if he took the punishment for us and that is what we deserved. Also because He said his Father forsook Him.

Death and Hades follow each other. Hades is the abode of the dead. Hades is a Greek word which means grave. Hosea 13:14 I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death. Where, O death, are your plagues? Where, O grave, is your destruction? Hell is the everlasting fire. It is the second death or eternal death. In Greek hell is Tartarus the place of punishment. 2 Peter 2:4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment. Hell is the lake of fire that never quenched and their worms never die. Mark 9:47-48 And if your eyes causes you to sin pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell, where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.

Neither, at least no through those verse.
2: 27 because you will not abandon me to the grave,
nor will you let your Holy One see decay
Jesus' resurrection after his death.
2:31 Seeing what was ahead, he spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to the grave, nor did his body see decay.
Nothing about Hades or Hell, but rather the resurrection of Christs body.

There are some theologians that believe that he went into hell to retrieve the souls that didn't truly belong there when he died and then 3 days later he resurected and then asended into heaven. That's the theory but I guess we wont know till we see him...

same place. just different interpretations of the word. And, actually, in versions of the scriptures before the NWT, edition, hell is not mentioned.
