In detachment, do you find you loose your zest? You fun side as well as your sad side? I am very interested in this, and have read some really great books. But in detachment, do you miss out on joy and 'geting down' when a good tune comes on (for one example)?

No, you still feel your feelings, but you understand that everything is temporary, joy as well as sadness, so it doesn't throw you off center. Most unhappiness is centered around fear of loss,of something or someone. Trying to hang on to one state of being is useless as things are in a constant state of change. Peace

All the other answerers have pretty much hit the nail on the head. I think that detachment does not have to mean you don't experience joy. It's the middle way; you're not supposed to be consumed by earthly things that give you joy, but you're not supposed to be miserable and isolated, either. I'm actually not a Buddhist, but I've taken a class on it and I realize just how amazing and diverse their worldview is.

well actually i'm not a buddhist but i do learn buddhist's teachings.
somehow your question means you're not really detach.
you're still attached.
anyway detach doesn't mean you can't be joy. you should enjoy the joy but not attaching to it because things are impermanence.
why not enjoy the good tune ? just enjoy it if it exist, what is wrong if you craving for more.

Buddhism assumes you will live thousands of lives and not quite reach enlightenment for a long, long time. I, for one, have accepted that I will not be enlightened in this lifetime. But my detachment from my desire to attain nirvana allows me to have a really good time in this life. Sure, I suffer as many people do, but that is a truism in this ethos. Whatever the case, I embrace my lower-immediacy (throwing some Kierkegaardian concepts in for good measure) and lead a thoroughly zesty life. I'm going to Vegas to party tonight!
