I assume you are asking about Borderline Personality Disorder. This is the diagnostic name for a pattern of behaviors. Some of the hallmark symptoms are difficulty with sustaining relationships, a tendancy to interpret things in all-or-none/black-or-white ways (e.g., someone is your 'best friend' until they disappoint you or annoy you once, then suddenly they become the most horrible person ever to walk the face of the earth), a tendancy to base decisions on emotions vs. facts/logic, difficulty managing and/or modulating their emotional reactions (i.e., a tendancy to become so upset over things and feel so out of control that suicide seems to be the only answer), difficulty sustaining a cohesive sense of 'self', and a general pattern of chaotic life situations/relationships because people with this disorder are so emotionally reactive and highly sensitive to their perceptions of other people's reactions to them and opinions of them. An older book (but still an excellent source of information that is a reasonably quick and easy read) you may want to pick up for additional info is "I Hate You, Don't Leave Me!" by Jerold J. Kreisman, M.D., & Hal Straus. You may also want to investigate information on a form of therapy developed specifically for people with Borderline Personality Disorder called DBT (stands for: Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) by Dr. Marsha Linehan.

In general, personality disorders are patterns of experience and behavior in areas of: cognition (the way you think about things), how you respond emotionally, how you interact with others, and how well you control impulses. Borderline personalities are characterized by volatile, unstable relationships, unstable self-image, and highly impulsive behavior. Feeling or being "abandoned" is a major issue that leads to frantic efforts to keep the other person around, though when the other person is there, they are either loved or hated. Frequent anger, paranoia, feelings of emptiness, and even suicide attempts are also common.

People have already listed the diagnostic criteria for you. I was diagnosed with BPD when I was 18, and the ones I really had were:
fear of abandonment
splitting (alternating between idealizing someone and hating them)
impulsivity
suicide attempts, cutting
unstable mood
chronic feelings of emptiness
intense anger
