Do you have a Good Will or Salvation Army thrift store in your area. The furniture is not free but you can get some really good deals on used furniture.Have you checked with family and friends who may be able to donate surplus furniture, household items etc.Check yard sales,flea markets and garage sales in which there is always something for a reasonable price.I hope this is of some help.

Have a shower for him
there is an organization called Love Inc. I think it is nationwide.
Have family members give a little money each and send him a gift certificate to some dollar stores etc. ...for kitchen tools or what ever he needs.

Are there any charities in the area? The Salvation Army will help you. They certainly do in my area. I know a guy who had a real rough time and the gave him some furniture. Check with them.

look into local churches or thrift shops in the area and post a note saying your story and that you would be willing to pick it up
