I lived there and have to say it is not my favorite part of honolulu. It isn't too dangerous, just really congested. Lots of apartment buildings, and right off the freeway. The best thing about makiki is it is easy to get to most of honolulu from there. Most people who live there work in the city, or go to University of Hawaii. If you were looking for a place to live, try kaimuki, or kapahulu. they are close to town, but closer to beaches etc, with a more Hawaiian vibe. I am from kailua on the windward side, and it was always worth the 20-25 min drive not to live in "TOWN". It all depends on what you like.

Yes I've been there, never lived in Makiki though I lived in Waimanalo on the Windward Side of O'ahu.

Yes - it's not that great comparitive to other parts of Honolulu...near everything, but nothing is really "there"
