How about the fact that before he wrote Dianetics he said in an interview that people were such sheep he could invent a religion and it would become a major religion with thousands of followers after he died. He did it just to prove a point and he did but then his son got rich on the dynasty and had that interview removed from circulation so that he would never have to work a day in his life.

That's an excellent question that I am unable to answer. Perhaps its members consider themselves to be cartoons. I know that Tom Cruise & John Travolta both seem pretty cartoonish.
