Check out craigslist.com for your local area. It beats dealerships hands down.

Don't buy them a decent car. Buy a real cluncker. Spend $300 or so. Maybe buy something that has already been in an accident. It is really likely that a 17 year old will have an accident. Just the odds on it. When they are 27 then they can get the decent car for $2000 or so.

Look in your local classified section or a TradingPost mag What you want for a new driver is an early to mid 80's full size sedan with a full frame under it and a V8 Pull 2 of the spark plug wires off so it won't run to fast and if the kid is buying his own gas well so much the better. A Full Frame car will protect them in a crash as they out weigh these newer smaller cars and will withstand a crash better than some little cute foreign car. That is what I put my daughter in in 1994 and when she wrecked into a pickup truck the only thing hurt was her pride

Cruise the back alleys in your own area. When you find a car that looks like it's been sitting for awhile (dusty, flat tire, etc.) go knock on the door and ask if you can talk to the owner and if they want to sell it. It's amazing the deal you can get!

I bought cars for each of my children on govdeal.com. Cost nothing to sign up and I look over the cars.. It being a goverment auction they have to tell you what is wrong with the vehicle.

you are buying you kid a car!?! aren't you so nice, let them borrow the money, get them a decent, yet not too nice you'd be totally pissed when they crack it. They will be on their own soon start teaching responsibility and that cars and money aren't free now and you have a better adult child later on.
