We were on the Splendour of the Seas in April of 2005. We took a tour to some of the Mayn ruins. The trip occupied nearly all the time we were in port as they were closer to the boarder of Belize. It was a great trip. We booked through RCCL just to be sure they were there when we got back. LOL It was our first cruise and weren't sure of booking with outside vendors.

The "port" has some shops but didn't strike me as any bargain and pretty much your typical tourist stuff.

Costa Maya does not have very much to offer. As I recall from our visit, it had a beach area and a small shopping plaza near the dock. Other people took tour going to other beaches for snorkeling and swimming. There was a place where they held a bull riding and rodeo type attraction across from the shopping. We got off ship and walked through the shopping plaza toward town a short way and then came back to the ship. Its not a very interesting stop in my opinion.

take a taxi to town. there are some nice beaches there. it is also a good port to dive. you should also be able to schedule some shore excursions to some ruins from that port.
