You have to consider what you can give the dog too, not just what you want from it. It's all very well to say I want a playful dog, but will you be able to give that dog plenty of activity all the time? Do you have space for it to go outside and play, even if you're not able to be out with it?
You also have to consider the space you have. Retrievers naturally spring to mind as fun loving and very affectionate, but a full grown retreiver can be a big dog... do you have the space for it?
I have a golden retriever, and a springer spaniel. The spaniel is without a doubt more fun loving, but she needs a lot of activity (probably more than I give her actually). The retriever is quite happy to go out and run around, or stay home and cuddle... as long as she's with the family, she doesn't care.

Start w/ what breed fits you best. SMALL are ez to maintain a Chihuahua is like a baby. A Jackrussel is a high speed fun machine. A Min Pin is a big dog stuck in a little body.
MED like a beagle is a good lazy dog. Some Collie and Shepherd's are med. and are great loyal dogs. Now the Large. breeds are more of a task, but also great dogs. Your best bet is to go to your local animal shelter and save a dogs life. Yes 80% are mutts but you tend to have a healthier most grateful dog to love.

The first and most important question to ask yourself is. What breed would best fit into my life style? I feel the environmental surroundings are extremely critical for the mental and physical well being of the breed. Example why would you want to keep a lab caged or even left in a backyard. Labs are without question the best breed period, mine is 13 1/2 years old.
My point is give great consideration to the dog and his/her lifestyle. get the lab!!!

Personally, I love German Shepherds. they are great companions! just make sure that they have a lot of room to play and live, since they get pretty big. Mine is a 92 pound male. he's almost 4 years old and still acts like a baby!Except when there's an intruder/stranger near. They are great guard dogs.

I have two Labs, one two and the other 8 weeks old. They are the best dogs in the world. Easy to train, as both of mine are crate trained and very loving, loyal and obediant. Plus they love people, and other dogs.
