My husband and I live with my parents. We try to help out as much as we can but we buy off brand stuff like Equate instead of name brand products. My mother refuses to accept that and complains. What should I do? Does she need to accept that off brands are just as good as name brands or should we fork out the extra money we don't have?

Mostly we buy off brand shampoo/conditioner or ibuprofen instead of Advil.

If she doesn't like it make her buy it. I buy store brand whenever I can and have done so since I can remember. It's all the same with the exception of one thing. I refuse to buy generic tampons. Yuck!!!!!

If you live in their house, you are gonna have to accept it.
I think you are largely right though. We buy about half of our groceries at Aldis (spelling???). We have learned, however, that it is just better not to try the off-brands on some products.
We tried their chili and suffered for days. We bought light bulbs that burned out in weeks.
But after time, we have learned what is just as good and what we have to skip and go with brand names on.
Your problem is that you can't experiment on your mom and dad in their home. As soon as you make a mistake and get something that they don't like, you're finished being able to buy any off-brands of anything.
Tough place to be. Good luck.

Certainly not all "off" brands or generic brand products are as good as name brands, but some are. As in many things, it can be a matter of taste. There are more than one brand of presweetened corn flakes, but I hope no one tells me that they taste and feel EXACTLY the same. Your discussion with your mother may have as much to do with nutritional equivilence. You may be able to demonstrate that but she may still prefer the taste of one brand over another.
I know that many generic and store brands are made and packaged by name brand manufacturers. Perhaps you can research this and show her your findings. You may be able to realize some savings by purchasing the exact same product in a different package.
If your differences can't be worked out, you may suggest separate budgets and separate pantries.

Buy what you can afford since off brands are generally the same quality and even manufactured by the name brand companies. That, or spend the same amount of money and buy fewer brand names.

No. Off brands are just as good. I mean, look at the ingredients. They're usually the same exact thing! Why pay twice as much for the same stuff?

I would continue to buy what you can afford, they all work the same. When your Mom complains again, politely tell her this is what you buy, if she wants the name brand stuff she will have to buy it.
