If you have an aluminum pan that is tarnished, dissolve some in water and gently boil it in the pan. It will remove the tarnish. It would probably work on anything you put in the water to. It is acidic.

Tartar Ice Cream. Yuuummm!!!!!!!!!
Tartar crystallises in wine casks during the fermentation of grape juice. This crude form (known as beeswing) is collected and purified to produce the white, odourless, acidic powder used for many culinary and other household purposes, such as:
Stabilising egg whites, increasing their heat tolerance and volume;
Preventing sugar syrups from crystallising;
Reducing discolouration of boiled vegetables;
Usage as a laxative;
Frequent combination with baking soda, as a leavening agent in formulations of baking powder.

By definition, it's for cooking. Why in the world would you need it for anything else?
Incidently, the best use of cream of tartar is for making Snickerdoodle cookies!

cream of tarter is a white residue left on the inside of a wine barrel. It is acidic and is used to balance the pH of a recipe, similar to baking soda. Since it is acidic it is most often seen in meringues. the acid causes a process called denaturing. Which is the breaking down of protein chains. the white of an egg is made up of water and a protein called albumen. the cream of tarter breaks this down slightly to allow the whites to be whipped higher. The sugar in the meringue is used as a sweetener and helps to stabilize the foam.

I can only think of cooking uses. It's good to eat with fish and chips and I like to put a little bit of it on my hamburgers and sandwiches instead of mayo.
Also...if you mix tartar sauce with ketchup (not to much, enough to give it a salmon color) you get a "rose" sauce. This serves as cocktail sauce that is great to go along with shrimp!

Use it when making meringue - it stabilizes the egg whites and makes them more fluffy, also use it when cleaning stainless steel or copper pots
